Is this a good first boat?

https://www.yachtworld.com/yacht/199...na-24-8226330/

I know she's small and slow, but figured I might be single handing quite a bit. Also if you go with buying the previous owner's maintenance she looks spotless. Also maybe I can get her a few thousand cheaper.

Should I go for it? They're decent little boats. I would sail down the west coast maybe eventually going through the canal and into the Caribbean. I mean no idea how far I'd make it but it would be fun to try and get some experience. As of now I only have a few thousand NM miles doing the english channel, coastal Europe and Bahamas as crew.. but I really want to take on the role as the mentally questionable captain.

Give me some encouragement to go for it.. i already know all the reasons why I shouldn't.

Re: Is this a good first boat?

Pacific Seacraft make good boats, I'd have no qualms about buying one, especially one that has been well maintained.
Still recommend a survey and haulout though.....always good to have another set of eyes on it.

Re: Is this a good first boat?

Ah, the choices in life that we face. I chose to have sailing in my life and haven't been sorry but, that doesn't mean it's the right choice for everyone.

The 27' Dana 24 looks like a solid little boat for coastal cruising. The Pacific Seacraft tend to be well built.

Re: Is this a good first boat?

I could think of a lot worse first boats than that.

For example my first couple boats.

That’s a very nice boat. It’s also small enough that you’ll be able to manage it and make some mistakes without causing too much damage.

Re: Is this a good first boat?

Hi, we have spent many years in Mexico cruising and traveling to all the ports. There was a family who called themselves the Swarski 7. That included the parents and 5 children. Don't know where they all slept but they had this boat and loved it. It is plenty big enough to make the trip and have a little fun while everyone else is slaving away!! Go for it!! Myles

Re: Is this a good first boat?

The Dana 24 is a great little boat. I buddy boated for about a year with one in Mexico many years ago. It was as fast as my 30 foot traditional boat too! The Dana has a long waterline.
That's a lot of money for a 24 ft boat though. But tha's a nice one.... 2022 I guess...

Re: Is this a good first boat?

I concur that the Dana would be a good boat, starter or long term.

Get a survey and do a test sail. If it’s good and you can afford it I say go for it!
One of the great pocket cruisers of all time, Has the huge benefit of being able to take you as far as you should choose to go.

Someone really liked that boat. I am not aware of any reason you should not have her surveyed and start enjoying her, except those you already know about! Do arrange for a berth for her as close to home as possible.

Re: Is this a good first boat?

Although Pacific Seacraft makes a great boat, I think for $69,000, you can buy something larger and just as good.
