Yes, the small mizzen is for balance and also serves as a riding sail. She can sail on all courses with the rudder locked but an autopilot is more convenient as when conditions change you have to readjust things.

The real use of the mizzen is to make the boat lie quietly at anchor (it is flat cut for that purpose) and in winds above 25kts sailing with mizzen and foresail make for a very easily handled rig, which is also good for motor sailing if feeling lazy.

Sailorxyz what's the theory behind that wild hull shape? You just need to paint her like our yacht to look really funky.
Cheers

Is that Dazzle Paint to confuse Orcas?

That is certainly not a traditional paint scheme but I like it!

I believe the idea was for a stiff hull that made minimal disturbance as it moved through the water. If so, it achieved that aim... the wake is minimal.

I repainted her at the beginning of the year, this is what she currently looks like....

Colour is not as wild as yours but still more than most appear to be able to handle!

Re: Junk-Rigged Cruiser Thread and AMA

I am planning on using a variation of a junk rig in my upcoming boat build, a 24' catamaran with a cambered biplane rig with freestanding masts. About 160ft2 total sail area. I have a couple questions if you don't mind.

Do you need a a downhaul of any sort to prevent the boom from being lifted when the wind picks up?

Do the sheets and weight of the boom and battens do a good job of keeping enough tension to keep the sail panels from getting distorted?

Is it better to have lighter or heavier boom and battens?

Being honest, how is the performance of the junk rig compared to others of the same sail area?

Can you sail upwind while heavily reefed in high wind?

Do the multiple sheet lines ever present a problem?

Can you get away with having only a halyard and sheet and something to gather the reefed panels?

Re: Junk-Rigged Cruiser Thread and AMA

SailorXYZ I love that paint job, way more interesting than white. Our paint scheme started out because the local shop had one litre cans of two pack paint in the clearance bin. The opportunity was to good to pass up.
Dustman we had a junk rig 25 footer and I personally missed the chance to fly a kite and really push the yacht.

Re: Junk-Rigged Cruiser Thread and AMA

I would encourage you to look into extensive technical information about junk rig rigging at the Junk Rig Association (https://www.junkrigassociation.org), including sizing battens, rigging a "fly up preventer, additional lines beyond halyard and sheet, upwind performance, etc. You will also find information about Pete Hill's biplane catamaran there or elsewhere.

If you are going to build or use a Junk Rig, as mentioned previously, join the JRA and get this book, Practical Junk Rig by Hasler and McLeod, https://www.amazon.com/Practical-Jun.../dp/1888671424.
