Keel failure - how to stay upright

..something else to consider...that sketch shows the angle of the keel almost horizontal, when in fact the weight of the ballast will probably have it in a near vertical position, meaning any rope tied around the blade would likely slide right off..

Yes, you are right. You would need a pretty good free diver AND bosun's mate.
