Re: Kirsten Neuschafer Cape George 36 @ 7.9 knots

As of 07:00 hrs. 11 Jan. UTC, Kirsten is running along at ~ 7.4kts.
She's opened up her lead over Tomy to ~300 miles.
Although his last days run was slow, he's now got his speed up to ~7.1.

Re: Kirsten Neuschafer Cape George 36 @ 7.9 knots

Sorry for the typo above, I meant 11 Feb.
Anyway, as of 17:30, The wind chart shows Kirsten getting close to where she can get the wind aft of the beam.
Tomy still heading East, closing the coast, and when he does turn S. he'll have the wind forward of the beam.
Kirsten has picked up another 25 miles in her lead.

She's been flirting with 8 knots all day and is presently at 7.6 knots.

Was at 7.8 an hour or so ago.

Re: Kirsten Neuschafer Cape George 36 @ 7.9 knots

Since Kirsten N. is getting close to going Round Cape Horn in a sailboat race, I thought it would be a good time to show those that raced Round Cape Horn on tall ships back in the day.

They also had what was called the Grain Race.

And BTW these sailors didn't have real good weather forecasts to rely on.......

Plus no safety harness or tethers for these guys...

Looks like Simon is on the move.

Maybe the repairs of his Biscay 36 are now complete.

The other Biscay 36 of Michael Guggenberger is closing in pretty fast so those two could end up having a good race up the Atlantic.

Anything can happen though and the lead 4 are still in it.

Since there aren't that many pleasure craft rounding Cape Horn right now or at any time looks like Kirsten's AIS is working just fine.

More than can be said for Simon and Abhilash. Goog's AIS is working.

Simon turned back into shelter...

"Simon is returning to an anchorage yet to be decided. He sailed out into 30kn gusting 40kn SW headwinds and not making pleasant progress, so has decided to make for a safe anchorage and wait for a few days. He has chosen an anchorage on the northeast of Isla Guamblin..."

A bad move, he should take advantage of the present wind to distance him self from the coast and take the next revolving door. Kristen may just make it. Will see.

I wouldn't disagree.

I listened to his latest Soundcloud clip ( https://goldengloberace.com/day-by-day/ ) and I formed the impression that he wasn't 'firing on all four cylinders'. Perhaps cumulative fatigue, with cumulative stress....

Perhaps a good night's sleep in a decent anchorage will recharge the batteries.

Abhilash called at 0852UTC to advise failure of his Wind Pilot .

Personally I would run NW.

Re: Kirsten Neuschafer Cape George 36 @ 7.9 knots

And Kirsten has now passed clear of the Diego Ramirez 'outlier' islands....
....and with plenty of sea-room from the Horn island group.

She'll be 'hanging a left' shortly towards Staten Island ( no, not the one near New York )

It appears he is now less than 40 miles off the coast.

Scary place to be with the current wind direction and strength. Is it possible to hide behind those many islands along that coast to the east of him?

Re: Kirsten Neuschafer Cape George 36 @ 7.9 knots

From the GGR Site Day to Day

UPDATE – Abhilash Tomy
Abhilash called at 0852UTC to advise failure of his Wind Pilot self steering gear and that he had used up all his spare pendulum blades in previous failures. He confirmed he has lashed the tiller and is now considering all options. At 0405UTC GGR had given Abhilash his position and a weather forecast as he was sailing along a lee shore with increasing winds over the next 24 hours. The GGR tracker was set at hourly at that time. He has requested no assistance and is in control of the situation. GGR will update as more information becomes available.
