Re: Kirsten Neuschafer Cape George 36 @ 7.9 knots

This video I believe shows the kind of person/woman Kirsten is plus the other videos of her experiences as a delivery skipper, high latitudes sailor, and cyclist that crossed Africa alone.

She's for real and now it's all about the boys chasing the girls or girl in this case. (old elementary school game)

The boat was refit by her with some help so she knows her boat......

Another newer video on the GGR:

They speak of Kirsten heaving too due to 50 knots on the bow

Re: Kirsten Neuschafer Cape George 36 @ 7.9 knots

Query re the distance to go. The only way I can make her dtg 4488 miles (as of 10th 0000Z ) is to lay a track from her present position directo to the Cabo Verdes. I think that is an unrealistic assumption and she won't find it in 'Ocean Passages'.

Hence my belief that the real difference between her and Abhilash is just 120 miles - give or take - ie their d lat.

Two abstracts from 'Passages of the World' attached.

^ At ~00:49 > ~00:52 it looks like she uses a double-mainsheet set-up like Barry on "Old Sea Dog".
Although I've always wondered why Barry, (thru all this time,) continues to use mis-matched tackles, one at 4:1, one at 6:1.
Go Kirsten.

Re: Kirsten Neuschafer Cape George 36 @ 7.9 knots

Interesting, Kirsten is trucking along N. at ~7Kts, wind abeam, and as she moves further N. the winds clock further aft.
Tomy is barely at 1Kt, he's going to have to go E. just to get the wind abeam.
Simon is moving along at ~4Kts., but he is about to enter the circular wind area that Tomy is in, and both of them will struggle to make much progress to the N. in the present conditions.
Just a few days ago Kirsten only had a lead of ~270NM., but she's now stretched that out to over 480NM.

Re: Kirsten Neuschafer Cape George 36 @ 7.9 knots

My 'reading of the runes' is that Kirsten will run into a band of light winds which will persist for 4-5 days. That could let Abhilash more or less catch up. Once she, then he, get through that difficult band, then the SE Trades would appear to carry 'em up to the Doldrums/ITCZ about the latitude of Ilha Fernando da Noronha.

There's all to play for.

What odds Simon will be first over the line?

Re: Kirsten Neuschafer Cape George 36 @ 7.9 knots

Probably should mention that Ian Herbert-Jones and Jeremy Bagshaw (who is sailing a 32' boat) are still on the course and not dropping out.

That's pretty nice to see as these guys planned to sail this race and to finish it!

Re: Kirsten Neuschafer Cape George 36 @ 7.9 knots

The GGR track-plot this morning shows Kirsten about a couple of hundred miles ESE of Martim Vaz/Trindade isles and struggling to claw free northwards of a growing band of very light airs.

Abhilash will shortly find himself in much the same windhole, if Windy.ty is to be believed.

Go Kirsten.
Jeremy Bagshaw seems to have the same configuration. The possible problem with Kirsten configuration is that the boom is pulled backward. @ 3.21

Re: Kirsten Neuschafer Cape George 36 @ 7.9 knots

Jean-Luc Van Den Heede used a double mainsheet system, and it seemed to serve him well enough.

I can see some of the merits....

Smart money now on Abhalish or Simon being first across the line.
