You can't forget the ratio of "sail area vs wetted surface" and her boats ability to "stand up" under more sail when/if things get rough.
The boats that Tomy and Simon are sailing, with lighter weight and cut-away forefoots, do have an advantage in lighter air and in short-tacking where they can round a mark and accelerate faster.
Once the wind/sea-state picks up they lose their advantage, then the longer LWL of her boat and its greater ability to carry sail comes into its own.
Yes, if the seas stay easy and the wind is light she will most likely lose, but if conditions get "exciting" then her boat can put the "horsepower" to better use.

Don't forget, they have to cross the line by quite a few hours ahead to beat her and as long as she beam reaches the E'lies up to 40*+N to hit the W'lies she's still in a good position to win.
Trying to beat into the E'lies would be a mistake.. and I reckon she knows that all to well.
The Long Way..

True that.
There is another advantage she has, it concerns the penalty for use of your diesel fuel/engine.
IIRC, you get a certain "allotment" for free, after that you pay for it in time.
The latest video spoke of that.
Simon? He's just on a cruise, he has no standing in the race.

Hoping for the best for Ian and Puffin. Seems like he is likely to have to ride out one of the strongest weather systems of the race so far.

Isla Picton is very much not in 'southernmost Argentina' - it is very much in Chile.

Ping - back in town after a few weeks at sea.

Not a lot of help in his area.
One tanker (red icon) 150 or so miles north and some fishing boats.
But then again you only need one.

Yes, yes, yes.
She's up to ~80 NM lead, and the Windy projections for the next few days are favorable for her, as she's coming in from a more Southerly direction to the finish.
And Tomy owes her almost a day in time.
Please Kirsten, I know you're pushing the boat, but don't break anything.
In a week or less you'll be there.

it does look like Kirsten has increased her distance from Tomy and is closing in on Simon this morning. that Cape George must be a great boat

I find it quite heartening that a design from the 1930s can hold its own against more modern designs.
I'm sure that Kristen's boat, (with greater weight and waterline length,) has provided an easier ride, leading to reduced fatigue over the long haul.
Me thinks that Cape George may see some additional orders.
Go Kristen.
