Re: Kirsten Neuschafer Cape George 36 @ 7.9 knots

the tracker says she is headed NE. better to get out ahead of the big low. maybe she turned south by now. coming from an armchair sailor looking at the wind maps

I guess I could "armchair" too., and came to more-or-less the same conclusion.
Yesterday a friend sent an email, we discussed what we might do if down there, but it was more about storm tactics.
I told him she still had some time, (and a good enough lead,) to move in a more Northerly direction, and then turn S to try and ride the tail end down.

So Simon had to do it by seat of pants and got hammered . Current pair of leaders have had a 'leave to port' waypoint removed and given extra wx info.

I'm calling foul on this.

And also what isn't shown in all this fancy weather info is the effect of a SWly swell over a decaying northerly sea as the wind drops.

I think this system is significantly strong than the one that unfortunately took out Simon’s Hydrovane. This was a bit of bad luck, plus he chose not to have any spare parts for it.

I understand that the waypoint removed is more of a safety factor to keep them off a lee shore situation rounding the cape.

I suppose the calculus was better to have them avoid this system and worry about the lee shore later.

No the race organizers help out all racers with weather data if they think it will endanger them.

The two leaders have both made the turn SSE and should be getting a good push from the system they are in.

Hopefully not to much of a push though depending on wave height etc

Hmmm, Abhilash now has the weather gauge with the wind out of the west by Thursday and 30 knots SSW and backing by Tuesday.

Yeah he had turned back West as of the last update.

Kirsten N is still only at 4.7 knots not sure if she turned down early or has minimal sail up expecting big winds etc.

I used to work with a pilot who had dyslexia of that form! He had to have 'LEFT' and 'RIGHT' stencilled on the backs of his flying gloves.....

Re: Kirsten Neuschafer Cape George 36 @ 7.9 knots

From the tracker it appears that based on the DTF, Abhilash is only back ~100 miles.
If they maintain present speeds, he'll pass her in a couple of days?

She is already on a good SSE course now though and is about to cross his bow with the lead still of around 90-100 miles.

I expect her speed to start increasing also unless she is still having trouble with her head sails

i think the NE turn was a mistake. turns out they got caught on the wrong side of the low .. i guess .. and now getting pummeled.

Re: Kirsten Neuschafer Cape George 36 @ 7.9 knots

The stronger winds should be about to get to her soon but she is down to one pole so can’t run twin headsails efficiently.

She may not need to in the strong winds coming and maybe can jury something in the mean time or sail on the wind more after rounding Cape Horn

Looks like she's picked up a few miles and some speed.
Go Kirsten.
