Re: l dont like my miserable sugar scoop stern!

Make up a piece of canvas and snap it over the scoop at night.

Re: l dont like my miserable sugar scoop stern!

I've had boats that were noisy from water slapping under the stern. No sugar scoop on them. I don't see how what is missing from above the water line is a big deal, it's what below the scoop that matters.

Re: l dont like my miserable sugar scoop stern!

Thanks you all for the several contributions :-)

Very good hints. I will get those colorful pool noodles, and try them, either floating or, more effectively, all around the hull rim.

If not, those floating shields by CJ-UK look well conceived for the purpose .

HR46 has a fairly higher stern then mine (Nauta 54). I have no ladder and no access to water astern.... just a sweet waterline.
(A PO and a racer had it longer..).

A few of you may remember my will for a longer hull astern, for a decent lazarette and a higher structure....

@ lmprezza72

....
It should be kept floating to break the waves.

I have fully insulated my hull acoustically and thermally...but that is a large drum almost flat and a few inches upon waters

If you anchor stern-to with any boat you will get wave slap.

Re: l dont like my miserable sugar scoop stern!

Like another comment before mine suggested" be careful what you wish for"

I had a friend of mine w/o a "sugar scoop" say the same thing about that noise as I was trying to board their boat like a monkey!

I've had 3....would not trade one in a heartbeat!

Re: l dont like my miserable sugar scoop stern!

It's amazing what I learn on this forum! There is a boat in my marina that has the pool noodle tied on the stern and floating just before the transom. I've walked by and wondered what it was for. I'm glad I found out before being embarrassed when I ask. Not when I see them I will compliment them on their wise re-purposing of the pool noodle

Love my sugar scoop, wouldn't want to be without, helps the admiral get into the dingy with no drama.

Re: l dont like my miserable sugar scoop stern!

The builder of our boat, Outbound Yachts, offers two models: Outbound 44 and Outbound 46. The only difference is that the 44 has a typical swim step, similar to what you might see on a Beneteau, and the 46 has an enormous swim step, and a bit more waterline.

We chose the 46, and are very glad we did. Getting on/off the dinghy, moving the outboard to the stern rail, unloading groceries, putting on our scuba gear, we us this space many times each day.

We've never had any problem at all with wave slap (well, maybe when the idiot water taxi goes by at 30 knots 8 feet off our stern).

Re: l dont like my miserable sugar scoop stern!

Sailed on boat with sugar scoop delivery Miami to Gib. found it great for taking a sea bath, also makes boarding from tender easy and makes boarding after a swim easy. We never had the problems you are writing about.

Re: l dont like my miserable sugar scoop stern!

I could explain the hydrodynamics of these issues to you, but take note, today only my rate's 11x the norm. If that's acceptable I take gold bullion paid in advance Seriously it's mostly design. And being coy about your boat, past posts about her, or playing pin the ass on boat design X surely won't help.

I suspect it is simply design. The end of the sugar scoop needs to be well clear of the water.

Re: l dont like my miserable sugar scoop stern!

Its a great stern to look at which gives the boat sweet lines, but stern hull slap can be awful.

We used noodles on a line to stop stern hull slap on our Catalina 380.
