l dont like my miserable sugar scoop stern!

How trendy and eye-catching were they for a couple of decades.? ..though so impractical unless fitted with (bad looking) ladders or platforms.

But, the real issue is another.
On moorings, a sugar-scooped stern is permanently awash by any surge of waves, smashing onto a large flat surface just sitting on the waterline, and creating intolerable noise and discomfort, exactly in The master cabin.

I feel like having a washing machine thumping on my ears right now.

Who did ever praise naval architects!?!? Not me. F### 'em all.

I find it a very stupid design feature, and l am wondering to change it btw for an earlier fashion, the elevated truncated design of the 50s.

Re: l dont like my miserable sugar scoop stern!

Interesting observation. They appear to have some advantages... maybe... such as a swin /dive platform or retrieving a MOB... maybe boarding a dink...

Most design decisions are trade offs.

You get what you want but you lose what you had....

What boat do you have.. Nauta54?

Re: l dont like my miserable sugar scoop stern!

Sounds like your problem is not a sugar scoop but a rear overhang that is too long and too low. The sugar scoop is the best feature of my boat and i would not trade it for anything.

Re: l dont like my miserable sugar scoop stern!

I’m thinking that much of one’s feelings on their swim steps comes from how it was designed. As there are a lot of things which can be done which mitigate or eliminate most of your objections. And as they say, a pic is worth… so throw up a few, & maybe ideas will fall from the sky like flurries in January. Though you’ve already named a few, & if you want more, look at some of the successful cruising designs out there. Which, there’s also some decent info on them in the Dashew’s Offshore Cruising Encyclopedia, Vol. II @ SetSail FPB » Free Books

PS: Little foam earplugs can be life savers… for you, & the person (or people) they save you from strangling

Do a google search for wave slap on hull and you might come up with some solutions. Even the images might help. Ear plugs are great for many noises.

UNCIVILIZED beat me to my Suggestion: post some photos of the boat. I suggest:

Profile shot of the entire boat, from water.
Closeup profile of the stern, show clearance above water.
View from astern.

Amazing what folk can overlook when they buy a boat.

Don't know your boat, but my sugarscoop (Bavaria 46) is perfect for swimming, fishing , or just sitting there with your feet in the water. If the only problem you have is water noise, try earplugs like somebody mentioned, or a good scotch on the rocks before sleep

Everything in boat design is a compromise. I have a canoe stern, which is arguably the quietest of sterns short of a true double-ender, and has other admirable qualities as well. But I give up plenty in the bargain from cockpit space to easy access to the water.

As noted though the cause of the slapping is not the sugar scoop it's the design of the hull form under and forward of it. Most scoops give up internal volume of the boat; they're not gratuitous extensions of the stern for the sake of providing a place to stand.

What he said. Yous was just badly designed.

It may also be that they work better on cats than monos. They are one of my favorite features, not because they are fashionable, but because they are very practical.

As for the argument that they subtract interior volume, that depends on how you look at boat length. What if they are added length, as mine are? IMO, most boats try to cram far to much stuff into the length for marketing purposes.

Re: l dont like my miserable sugar scoop stern!

You have to look at it the way the builders do...take a 40 foot boat and add a cheap to build 2 foot sugar scoop and you now have a 42 foot boat unfortunately the interior size didn't change but it's 2 feet bigger.

You bought the boat.
You must have noticed it had a sugar scoop.
I don't see how you can blame others for your bad buy.

Sell it and buy another boat.

Simple.

Re: l dont like my miserable sugar scoop stern!

Scoops are (...)load on some boats but cream on others.

I remember wild wave slaps on Bavaria 43 but there was zero noise on a HR46.

So I think a good scoop exists but it is often attached to a good boat ...

Re: l dont like my miserable sugar scoop stern!

What I have done in the past is to take a short floating line, and ran it through the center of the largest pool noodle available, and ran it underneath the stern at the water line, tied off on both ends to the spring cleats. the trick is to have it float right at water level against the hull. It worked great. The total cost was around $5, as we used the old dinghy painter...
