Re: Lifting a 30ft-er on Cradle onto a Flatbed (without a crane)

I loaded and unloaded a boat using several stacks of pallets under the stern.

Then used a chunk of mobile home frame I beam just forward of the keel lifting it and cribbing slow. The trailer fit under it fine. Cost me nothing but time.

Next time I used pallets again and a loader lifting aft then bow. You can rent a large loader for less than $400 for a day where I live.

I did similar with the 24 foot sailboat I built back in the 1980's. 2/3 the length and 1/3 the weight of the Alberg. Went smoothly but was scary as hell. I was a lot younger, braver, and dumber back then, I don't think I'd try it now.

Re: Lifting a 30ft-er on Cradle onto a Flatbed (without a crane)

I have my boat in a boat yard on its cradle in Port Clinton, OH. Me and my girlfriend had plans of sailing from there, through the Great Lakes, down the rivers to the gulf back home to Texas. Anyway our plans changed when we found out she was pregnant so we had to “abandon ship”. So now I have to get the boat back home, and I’ve run into the same issue of trying to save some money by hauling it back home my self rather than pay someone. My boat is just shy of 32f long with a 10.45 beam. She weights in around 15k. Was gonna pull it with a 1ton and tend a gooseneck trailer. Just curious what your thoughts were on it. I wouldn’t have to crib it. I’d use the crane in the boat yard to load it. But do you think i would have issues making that haul at such a long distance.

Hi, Johnymac, and to the forum.
Issues to consider transporting a boat that large yourself:
  • Trailer capacity - max load of trailer
  • Truck towing limits - max weight of tow for each the truck and the hitch.
  • Total height of tow - bridge clearance
  • Width of tow: at over 10' you will need permits in at least some of the states from OH to TX. You can look up the requirements for each state.
