Re: List of the best small 30-35' full keel cruising boats based on traditional desig

The Cape George line of boats are fiberglass but look like a traditional wood boat, you can find them used in the PNW. They're built in Washington state, by the same people that now build the Hess designed Bristol Channel Cutter.

I see Carina beat me to it!

Ya gotta be fast on the keystroke...

I should note that most of the Cape George Cutters were owner completed, and all of them were custom builds. This means that there are many differences in layout and details (and quality) between boats. And some beautiful examples have been left to rot, or otherwise have suffered from neglect. So please don't judge by a bad one or expect all of them to be as nice as yard-completed ones.

A Saltram 31 or 36 meets all of your requirements.
Great Water boats">blue water boats.
Google Saltram Owners Club for more information.
Built in Plymouth England, very high quality.
My old Saltram 31 is for sale and lying in Gibraltar.
Very well restored/maintained and equipped.

You're a little late and on the wrong side of the country but a good friend took the chainsaw to his Atkin Elf a couple years ago. He did the unthinkable or more accurately the actual thinkable and got himself a Niagara 35 for tackling the offshore stuff. Too much work sailing the gaffer alone for the aging. You'll probably find some eager sellers for this type vessel if you get lucky. He tried but over the course of the several years and storage cost the best deal he got was a guy offering to dispose of it for what he could salvage.

Why not an Alberg 35/37? Both are available with yawl rigs. Or a Baba 30/35. I don’t believe those are ketches but definitely meet your “traditional” requirements.

As others have mentioned deck stepped mast are plenty safe.

A bronze Allied Seabreeze 35 is well worth looking at.

Best of luck,

A Prairie 32 would fit the bill as well, if you can find one. there are still maybe up to a dozen and a half or so, with prevalence seeming to be in the Pacific northwest. Not too many folks have heard of them.

Re-built smacks, as in my 1885 avatar, occasionally come up for sale in the £60k plus region. At 44 foot on deck she has about the same living space below as a modern 35 footer. They have crossed oceans but you need to be an enthusiast to stand on deck at the tiller in all weathers. http://www.smackdock.co.uk/

Re: List of the best small 30-35' full keel cruising boats based on traditional desig

Admittedly a bit of a long commute, but here in Tasmania there is a very active wooden boat community, with new builds and restorations under way and a fair number of decent condition woodies of all types appearing on the market.

Nice cruising, too...

Re: List of the best small 30-35' full keel cruising boats based on traditional desig

Cannot help with under 35', but somewhere on the PNW coast there is a NZ designed and built timber yacht, for sale, called Sagata. It is approx 50ft. Designed by the Wellington Naval Architect Athol Burns, this is a very strongly built yacht which sailed from NZ via Japan about 5 years ago. I would have bought this yacht myself, except that I am very slow to make purchasing decisions and a friend got there before me.
