Lost companionway key

all. Lost the keys to the companionway lock on my 419 jeanneau. Lock looks like toolbox type of lock.
It’s the glass door version.
Locksmith says he has to break the lock.

Any other options?

How can I break the lock myself if it’s the only solution?

Thx!

Re: Lost companionway key

IMO, those locks should easily be picked. So, without any pictures, I would guess you're describing a cam lock.
Many cam locks can be turned with a large flathead screwdriver.

Cam lock. Correct
Screwdriver: forcing or moving around to move the teeth?

If it's an old lock, try any key that fits it a jiggle it up and down and in and out while turning it.

I would be very careful with a screwdriver if you try that method.

A picture of the lock would be great. If you have time to order a wave rake, there's a decent chance you could get this open yourself. I'm surprised a locksmith isn't tacking a crack at this, it makes me think there's more to this lock than meets the eye.

Re: Lost companionway key

any chance you can open up one of the forward hatches and drop into the V berth and then take the lock apart from the inside?

Re: Lost companionway key

If you need in quickly and don't care if the lock is damaged just drill it out. It won't damage the hatch or companionway.

Re: Lost companionway key

SOLVED

we just lifted the top of the companionway enough so the latch was useless...
Great way to find out that we've never had anything secured on the boat!!!!

Thx all!!
