Re: Marina recommendations in RI, CN, NY

CTSeadog is right about prices, but if you go up river beyond ,Essex, (pricey), are a couple of places that are more reasonable, toward Middletown, and Haddam, or Better yet along the coast are, Niantic or Stonnington, CT. You have a lot of choices up there.

Re: Marina recommendations in RI, CN, NY

Try Harbor House Marina in Stamford, CT - a very nice marina.
Dock Master: Carl Bochterle
tel.: 203-977-8772
or
Schooner Cove - next door to Harbor House Marina
(not actually a marina, but a condo association with about 100 slips)
Slip Manager: Dorie Moore Smith
tel.: 941-924-1207

Both are very reasonably priced on a month-to-month summer (or winter) slip rental. I've used both, and am currently at Schooner Cove with my 37 ft. sailboat.

Pirate Cove Marina on the Sakonnet River in Portsmouth, R.I. Extremely well protected, great staff, easy access by water and land. Haul your boat if needed. I don't know what the slip availability is but they also have moorings. I'm a full time liveaboard and moved here this past Spring from a less protected location. Very satisfied. Brandon Kidd runs the place and is helpful, friendly and accommodating. Pirate Cove Marina 401-683-3030

Re: Marina recommendations in RI, CN, NY

I used to keep my Triton at Ram Point Marina, in Wakefield RI, several years back. Family owned and friendly and at that time fairly reasonable $ compared to the rest of Narragansett Bay. Reason is that it's in a hurricane hole a few miles north of Point Judith and the port of Galilee at the north end of Point Judith Pond, so it's a bit of a trek to open water and Narragansett Bay, but has easy access to Wakefield shops and Narragansett (town of) beaches.

Re: Marina recommendations in RI, CN, NY

I wouldn't rule out NYC if you only did so because of prices. I kept my last boat at DiMeglio's Boat Yard in Brooklyn and their prices were better than almost anywhere else I've seen on the East Coast. It's a simple boat yard with absolutely no amenities and plenty of space to accommodate you. The guys are trustworthy and competent and the yard is extremely safe, though it might not look it at first glance. If you call up, ask for Neil and him them Jack from Orange Crush sent you. Heck I still even have a ladder chained up there you can use, just let me know and I'll send you the key!

If you go to RI you will find that everything in boating gets cheaper the further you go from Newport. Try Apponaug Marina which is a little primitive but quite close to the airport. If you are getting off the boat the facilities shouldn't matter.

Might score a decent rate on a mooring at the mouth of the mystic river ( noank,ct) noank shipyard ,
Maxwells boatyard, and noank village boatyard all have moorings , being July might get a better rental rate and each have Different amenities , from None ,
To everything ....

Re: Marina recommendations in RI, CN, NY

Like a couple other posters said, northern narragansett bay has very reasonable rates for both summer and winter storage. Warwick cove and Appanoag have a number of marinas to choose from with both moorings and dock space. Depends on what amenities and support facilities your looking g for. RI also has a decent size marine industrial sector with a number of boat builders, maintenance facilities and marine suppliers within reasonable range. I pay $34.00 ft for winter storage including haul out/in and power washing. The closer you get to the mouth of the bay the higher the prices. Some of the upper bay coves are also good hurricane holes.

Re: Marina recommendations in RI, CN, NY

Even though I live in Massachusetts now I still keep my boat in RI because of the lower cost and access to support services.

Re: Marina recommendations in RI, CN, NY

One thing others didn't mention was that the bay and surrounding islands offer some great sailing either south toward Long Island or north toward Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and Maine waters.
