Mast position

I have a 42' Amor sloop and have been told the mast might need to move forward.

I'd rather not move the mast but I want the boat to sail well as I plan to go off shore. I understand that cutters have the mast further back. Here's a picture where you can see the mast is well behind the front of the keel.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Mast position

Until you sail the boat, any advice is specious.

But there are easier ways to alter her balance than moving the mast, which is a major structural issue and IMO usually not worth the effort and expense (which would be significant indeed).

Adding sail area forward via a bowsprit and perhaps shortening the boom and reducing the mainsail size are possible means of altering the balance.

Bt until you sail her in various conditions, no one can make useful suggestions.

Re: Mast position

The picture didn't come through. I suspect the person who told you to move the mast is not the designer, or a naval architect. Is it that you don't want to sail her as a cutter anymore? Does she have too much weather helm? That may just be from overpowering the rig and heeling too much.
