Re: Monohulls with good natural ventilation

Good ventilation is incredibly important. Generally a few big hatches that can catch the breeze at anchor are much better than a multitude of small opening hatches. Multiple hatches present many potential sources of leaks.

Don’t forget to include some hatches that can left open in heavy rain.

Finally, windscoops combined with a large hatch can capture breeze on those almost windlass nights at anchor. We had the factory install some eyelets around the hatches which can be used to attach a windscoop, a rain cover to enable the hatch to be left open during rain, or a storm cover in the event of leaking hatch. A similar idea could be retrofitted to other boats.

Any with the large forward hatch open. Add a Windscoop for bonus points. It's like a windtunnel with that hatch open, boats swing into the wind.
I never found cabin side portlites to add much breeze at all.

I didn't know windscoops made that much difference. Thank you. I'll look into that.

They can for sure. Kinda like a mini spinnaker they are made out of light fabric. A spinnaker can move a boat pretty fast in a very light breeze. The anchored boat turns into the wind, so keep the scoop full. I've had times I had to douse it because it was like a wind tunnel in the boat.

The other thought about boats that ventilate well is interior designs that are not obstructed by offset cabins or other stuff. If the doorways are on center and all ope it works well.
There are a few designs that put a midships cabin that obstructs the path... but it's not something done that often.

Windscoops are great except 1) when it's raining, and more often 2) when there are bugs around, because it's difficult to use an insect screen with it.

For this season Ive taken and sewed velcro to both sides of the lower edge of the scoop and put velcro on the underside of the hatch opening. the scoop gets velcroed to the hatch opening and the screen gets velcroed to the scoop (see the pic) hook and loop velcro color coded in the pic

with the velcro all the way around the hatch. If I'm at dock and not plugged in I can use the scoop just put it on facing the prevailing wind. Ive been toying with making an omni directional scoop that is better suited for at the dock, but since Ive got my AC working on shore power, havent really played with it...

Re: Monohulls with good natural ventilation

Maybe the open concept interior is the answer.

Which monohulls have that?
