Monohulls with good natural ventilation

Let's talk about the monohulls with decent natural ventilation.

Re: Monohulls with good natural ventilation

I believe we Americans are way too attached to our AC units nowadays. I miss the good old ways, the relaxing caress of a cool breeze on a warm summer's day...

The problem is that gophers know more about natural ventilation than yacht designers.

Somehow they seem airtight when it's hot and drafty as an irish castle when not.

It is amazing, isn't it? Most modern boats have few, if any, side windows that open. The best bet is to open the front hatch and the companionway and hope for a favorable breeze. We have a box fan that fit in the front hatch, it helped. Under way though, our side windows don't open, all we can do is leave the companionway open.

Re: Monohulls with good natural ventilation

The one boat I've seen with what looked like good ventilation was a J/28. Despite being a J-boat, it is really more of a pocket cruiser.

After changing the fixed ports for huge opening ports our boat was a changed animal.

It’s a 1976 allied seawind II ketch.

We put new found metals opening ports in the salon.

Monohulls with good natural ventilation

My Tayana has 10 opening ports in the cabin sides plus one in the aft bulkhead from the galley to the cockpit and one from the quarter cabin to the cockpit. And there are 5 opening deck hatches, and 4 dorade vents. Natural ventilation is quite good.

Re: Monohulls with good natural ventilation

Our Catalina 42 had several hatches on deck that opened so as to be able to funnel air below into the main sleeping area. We never ran the generator or AC at anchor at night if we had any kind of breeze going (outside of a couple of places like Little Shark River due to bugs). We even had to close the hatches a few times in the summer early in the morning because we were too cool in Florida.

Re: Monohulls with good natural ventilation

It's usually isn't a problem when at anchor anyway.

Open forward hatch and if there is any wind at all, you get all the airflow/breeze you need right thru the cabin.

I don't usually stay at marinas when sailing so havn't had a problem with the lack of ventilation.

Re: Monohulls with good natural ventilation

Boats are built for all types of sailing. In the end, you get what you pay for. You want dorades...they cost money. You want opening ports...more money.
This is not because vessel designers do not understand fluid mechanics. The market sets what the customers want in a boat. It’s an experienced sailor who asks about seacocks or wire or the rudder shaft. Or ventilation in rain or rough weather. Different boats for different folks.
I’m not sure I understand the question. Is it a general discussion of how to improve air flow or are you asking which boats already have good ventilation.
I’ve told the manatee crew not to bake pizza in a crowded harbor but they are kindhearted and give slices to any boat with children aboard.
Happy trails to you.
The manatee crew.

Re: Monohulls with good natural ventilation

Yesterday I had to remind my wife we should be thankful sweatshirts were required in the 10 mile visibility fug. While it's 70 on the coast it's like the surface of the sun just a few miles inland. A few powerboats here have AC but almost no sailboats.
