Morgan 382 Rudder Modification

I am working through the purchase of a Morgan 382. Along with the normal bottom work I must do before launching I am interested in upgrading her rudder area and configuration to overcome what some say to be a weakness of the Morgan 382 ...too small a rudder for off-wind control. I am attaching BEFORE & AFTER pictures of such an upgraded Morgan 382 rudder and would appreciate any comments from anyone who has done this before. Material used; methods; and final results...

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Morgan 382 Rudder Modification

To those of you who might be interested in responding to my post about Morgan 382 Rudder Modification ...I finally figured out how to add the BEFORE & AFTER pictures of a known Morgan 382 Rudder Modification. As I said in my 1st post on this subject ...I am working through the purchase of a Morgan 382 and will be doing all her bottom work soon after the purchase. One of the things I want to do is modify her rudder to overcome what is considered a weakness of the Morgan 382 ...which is too small a rudder area for good off-wind control.

I would appreciate any comments regarding material used; methods; and final results.

Thanks,

Paul...

Tony Carey’s refit to his 1978 Morgan 382 “Papeche” is described at:

You might contact Tony, for information.

Re: organ 382 Rudder Modification

Thanks Gord for the info links. One can not get enough info when researching a boat purchase ...and I have come across much of it through the Morgan 38 Owner's Board. It appears the rudder mod is one that several have done ...but the reported results are generally sketchy as is information on the materials and methods used in the modification.

I am looking forward to owning, restoring and sailing the Morgan 382.

Sweet looking rebuild. Rudder looked pretty big to start with. Do you have enough ratio in the steeering to control it well now?

Kalise,
If you can get Bob Perry's comments it might be usefull. I believe he said he uses a NACA 0012 section on his rudders. You can google NACA 0012 or Bob.

Cheechako ...yes it is a sweet looking re-build on that rudder. It was done on a Morgan 382 (hull #4 named OCONEE). I have not been able to contact the owner for information. The Morgan 382's rudder is actually too small for her and Morgan (sans Brewer) redesigned the rudder to almost the size of OCONEE's re-built rudder for their Morgan 383 & 384's with succesful results. This is why appparantly many 382 owners made these rudder modifications.

Cadence ...I did look into NACA 0012 specs. My intention is to enlarge the present rudder to nearly what OCONEE has and fairing to a featrhered cross-section as well as I can. Hopefully, I will approach the NACA 0012 shape. What I am looking for is info from someone who has done this and what material/methods they used. At this point I am looking at Foss Board and fiberglass layup.
