Re: Need help with a bad purchase

Not sure if that was mentioned, but normaly you would pick someone accredited with SAMS or NAMS to do your survey, so your search for an independent surveyor in a foreign country could simply start with one of these two bodies.

In cases where insurance or financing needs to be considered, having one of these two providing you with a survey would likely be required.

Re: Need help with a bad purchase

The survey includes: "In the kiel there is rotting water."

Without further explanation, this could be a real deal breaker. Does the surveyor mean there is water inside encapsulated keel? If so, the keel would need to be opened, water allowed to drain out and dry, and the entry point(s) for the water located and sealed.

Have you ever had a boat surveyed in Southern Europe?

I don’t know. For $15k it sounds about fair. Plenty of projects being sold for more.

At any rate, there isn’t much wiggle room that close to 0.

I’m with the others in that it’s not the surveyors fault here.

This is why this nonsense is misleading there are no SAMS accredited surveyors in Greece. You’re much more likely to get YBDSA or if you want high end , RINA or DeNotseVeritas NAMS AND SAM is largely continental US focussed

Secondly unless you are ordained to pay lots , you will be faced by the selection choice of possibly ONE local surveyor maybe at a push TWO.

The OP was not buying in the USA.

In the US people are more litigation crazy so any standard survey has a page of legal disclaimers to discourage lawsuits

So do firecrackers which come with a warning "do not insert in bodily orifices" because there's always that one guy...

A short hop and $$$ of travel expenses. Not to mention a Turk would be working illegally

Typically in most med countries surveyors operating in English would be YDBSA certified , in Italy most are RINA certified , though the RINA boys tend to do ships and big yachts

Travel there is pretty cheap and it may have saved him a $15k hole in the water. Any decent surveyor would have strongly advised him to be present for the survey. Whether he would have listened or not is a different issue.

I doubt any surveyor would have prevailed

When we bought in spain, we found a couple surveyors online and asked at nearby marinas (no affiliation with the seller).

Google translate is your friend. Not perfect but better than simply trusting the broker not to have a buddy who plays surveyor.

Of course, that doesn't appear to be the case with the OP as several major issues were noted even with the general poor quality of the survey.

The surveyor he used identified quite a few red flags. The primary problem is that the buyer was not listening.
