Re: New boat vs Used boat

Even simple things can fail in short order ... last year I installed a new wind-vane on the masthead. The very next day, one of Gods' creations used it for a perch & broke the damned thing off . . . Of course, it didn't really "fail" as in faulty product, it was destroyed by one of those damned flying garbage eaters that for some strange reason are "protected by law" in many countries.

I know of a bird flying off with a critical part of a masthead weather station.

Used!!! New boats are not rigged for offshore (in general) and the depreciation over the first year is best for someone else to bite. You can get older used boats for cheap and then spend $$ to upgrade and go... Much less cost than a new boat that will still need upgrades before you go.

Do you know how long it took me to train that bird?

That is precisely why they are protected. Because they eat the garbage! That is a good thing. My complaint is, not only do they perch on my wind vane and threaten to break it as happened to you, but they transfer the garbage, transformed into poop, all over my sails and deck. Now, if I can only train it to perch on my neighbors mast.

I believe that is what happened to my anemometer cups.
I have a ultrasonic weather station going up now, sort of looks like a mushroom, so how that the flying rats don't harm it.

Re: New boat vs Used boat

Walking down a dock one day, I was entranced to watch a crow methodically attacking the little anemometer cups on a boat. Incidentally, we have a friend who smokes cigars. He used the aluminum bottoms of the cigar tubes to replace the broken plastic ones on his anemometer.

Don't we all just love nature! (attempt at humor)

Re: New boat vs Used boat

I do not have personal experience from buying old, But i have bought new, and have had no issues and most of my sailing chums out here have new with no issues. I have heard problems with new boats but just the same amount of problems with old boats. So i would say if you have the cash New if you are on a budget then second hand, but remember to keep about 25% back for upgrades. Cheers
