Nor'Sea 6' 5" Headroom

Most of the men in our family are about 6’ 4” and we do like to stand up straight when below. I also have the restriction that I want to keep the weight of trailer and sailboat below 12,500 pounds so I can tow it with my diesel dully pickup. The Nor’Sea is a sailboat that has an option of 6’ 5” headroom and is well within my weight limit. My question is how common is this option, what percent Nor’Sea have it, and how did they get the extra headroom. Can I spot this from outside of the sailboat? The Pearson Vanguard 33 and Pearson 31-2 also have enough headroom, but are pushing the weight limit of my truck.

Nor'sea owner here.

I'm 6'5" tall and do not have full standing headroom. Doesn't bother me.

The only thing that changes the headroom is how the cabin floor is attached. On mine, there's not much room below the floor to the top of the lead ballast. Some boats have the floor higher/lower than others.

I'd be happy to answer any other questions you might have. You could also join the NS27 Owners group here: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/NorSea27/info

It's a good group of owners and some good info buried in the archives.

Thanks so much for the response. I will join the Owners group. Does it appear that the floor could be easily lowered?

Re: Nor'Sea 6' 5" Headroom

When I had my Nor'Sea, the only place I could stand is right under the companionway slider (I'm 6' tall). If there is a different height option, I'd guess it's a taller cabin top. If those do exist, I bet they are very rare.

There isn't much floor to lower. Pushing it lower would give you almost nothing. I considered it myself but ultimately decided that the crooked neck wasn't that bad.

Sometimes a shallow or very shallow bilge will give you more headroom, and more obvious is a higher cabin.

Re: Nor'Sea 6' 5" Headroom

I've owned my Nor'sea 27 since 1996...surely don't know everything about this boat but have never heard of a higher cabin version. If they exist, they must be rare. Besides the factory finished hull/deck, a kit option was also offered. Those builders had the potential of playing around headroom by setting the cabin sole elevation. Mine is about 2 inches deep in the forward part of the cabin. I've never had problem but I'm only 5' 7".

Never been inside a Nor'Sea. There are a few on the Great Lakes so maybe.

Re: Nor'Sea 6' 5" Headroom

My second boat was a Nor'Sea 27. I am 6'1" and found head room challenging. As I did the head. Also boom height above the cockpit was a problem for us. Changing the salon to a bed nightly got old as well. But she sailed well, and we trailered her from Washington to Florida. Held it's value too. But storage space is difficult. Never saw one with more height in the interior. Not sure how you would get that without a redesign.
