OMC Saildrive ?

I'm thinking of buying an older boat (1982 Hughes 31) with an OMC saildrive motor? What do I need to look for/ ask to see if it's any good? How reliable are the motors? What are good replacement motors if needed?

I am also considering an older boat--an 1980s vintage S2 with an OMC saildrive lower unit, but with no motor (just parts for gas motor).

How do I find out if the saildrive is in working condition?

And, if the saildrive is useable, does anyone have advice on replacing the gas motor with an electric motor?

There's a thread here about adding a Diesel engine to the OMC drive. But it's not a straight forward conversion.

To see if it's useable may be as simple as attaching a cordless drill to it and see if I functions.
