I'm sure some electrician down the line will scratch his head. I explained it to the surveyor and he nodded.

Re: onboard safe/vault

Some Oysters actually have a safe storage onboard.

You have a vast boat and it will be easy to build what you want. Have it seated in some unlikely place so that neither thieves nor customs get tempted to find it and ask you awkward questions.

Do.

Also think of access in case of emergency. Bot on fire or sinking. You do not want your safe storage to go down in haste to rest beyond the sounding line ...

Re: onboard safe/vault

I like large, boring books. Not on a bookshelf, that will get rummaged. A nice, thick engine manual in a drawer full of parts. Hollow out the pages and place passports and cash in that. They will open the drawer, see the parts and the manual and more than likely move on. people rarely keep their valuables amongst their junk.

Put a bin strapped down in a mechanical space and place several think manuals in it. Make sure the top one or two are whole manuals. It's unlikely they'll dig that far into the bin. At least not past the first 1-2. They not horders poring through junk. They rushing.

I like heavy wooden elements well matched in color and shape to boat's original woodwok.

To any non sailor as well as to 99% of other boat owners, such heavy chunks of wooden furniture never seem to be hollow.

I have my hidden place in play side...one is just part of the wall, the other is in the pilot house ceiling, but the lock is RFID, so unless you have the card, it can't be opened

Re: onboard safe/vault

Have a small obvious easy to pull out safe, but secured to something that can break and not hurt anything. Put stuff in it that makes noise so it sounds good as they go away.

Leave a bit of cash out that is easy to find.

Hide your stuff in other places.

The thief will have something to take with them and some cash so they wont think about damaging more stuff. You wont really be loosing much.

I had a Beneteau when I first asked the question. My Oyster does have a built-in safe, fairly well concealed. But I think the suggestions to spread the valuables out, including some in an obvious place like the Egyptians did when they built the pyramids, some in the safe for the gun-to-the head situation, and some in unexpected and unlikely places constitute the best solution. Lots of clever suggestions about unlikely places.

Re: onboard safe/vault

A safe that is not permanently mounted to a certain place is a tempting target for burglars. I personally recommend safes and vaults attached to any walls or underground within your premise. Whether at home, commercial locationor on board, safes should always be mounted. I hope this helps you.

Welcome to CF. Did you join the forum just to advertise safes or because you are interested in sailing and cruising?

Can you show us a photo of the safe that you have on your boat please.

Only two posts, both with links to the same website. I think it's pretty obvious.

Safes are vertical or horizontal mounted

An “ underground “ underfloor safe, horizontal mount is very common on yachts

Typically mounted under a settee cushion or bunk

A safe is most useful at preventing opportunistic theft ...your fellow cruisers
