I would throw a full service at the existing engine. have had outboard power in the past and the difference can be quite marked between freshly serviced and longgggg overdue. both on reliability, ease of starting and power. It may even have something on it that needs fixing!


Having said that, you won't be undertaking long passages under power with the current outboard, nor powering yourself out of all kinds of trouble - but those things nice to have as an option, but can largely be worked around.........by thinking carefully how you are going to get somewhere. and get back

If not fitted already, then remote controls for the throttle / gears makes life easier - just leaves hanging over the stern for starting

I'm with Dave on this one . Ten horse, electric start with remotes. Makes life so much easier
