Your comment made me smile, and made me think...

John Lennon was a sailor, and he once sang:

"Some may call me a dreamer, but I am not the only one..."

There is no harm in looking.

And I am glad you and others have enjoyed this thread. I would love to own any of these boats I post here. Some are real beauties, some have great character.

So I suggest everyone who views this thread should subscribe. I intend to add a lot more eye candy (boat porn) to this thread as I have more time.

IF one is looking to purchase a much lower priced boat, then I suggest subscribing to the "Boats $30K or Less" thread, as I will be adding many more to that too, and those can be great deals that are grabbed in a few days after first posting them, so best to be notified as soon as possible when they are identified/found.

Wow that Berkeley / Oakland / SanFran is a living space deal of the century, long as the slip is certain and reasonable.

Could even live on Uber wages at that rate!

Re: Outstanding Boats - A Special Selection of Unusual and Noteworthy Boats I Find

Tayana 55 Center Cockpit
___________________________

Steady's Notes

The photos of the boat show a nice looking boat, in what appears to be good condition. As with any boat, a survey is a good idea. Caveat Emptor.

I like what I see in the photos. There are many more photos showing the interior and cockpit and details on the linked page. This particular boat has a nice engine room space, beautiful aft stateroom, very nice saloon, extensively equipped Nav Station, etc.

The Tayana 55 Center Cockpit is a boat I have admired since the 1980s. I have long considered it a nice "yacht" and often thought of it as one of the types I would enjoy sailing on long cruises or on a circumnavigation. It has a reputation for quality build by a reputable brand/yard.

This particular boat has a very detailed description of the extensive cruising gear it has now, and description of the interior layout and features. I have been aboard a Tayana 55 (but not this particular boat) and was impressed by the quality of everything I saw at that time.

This particular boat is priced at what seems to me to be a low price (reason unknown). The ad does not mention any problems with the boat, but does say "as is, where is" on it. Caveat Emptor!

This is a LOT of boat for $129,000!

This boat is a USCG Documented boat.

This is a LOT of boat for this Asking Price.

I like what I see in the photos. There are MANY more photos showing the interior and cockpit and details on the linked page.

I particularly liked the following:
1. Interior use of wood (the furniture looks nice)
2. Large galley, looks like a key feature of this boat
3. Lots of storage lockers
4. Pilot house type cockpit with glass and long settees (looks like a very nice place to enjoy cruising)
5. Nice looking deck (covered in a synthetic material with teak appearance)
6. Big windlass
7. Solid hand rails around the boat
8. Profile of boat is appealing

The aft master cabin has a very large berth mattress, lots of storage lockers, cedar lined hanging lockers, Corian counters. This may appeal to many.
The boat also has a large gas grill on the deck.

Re: Outstanding Boats - A Special Selection of Unusual and Noteworthy Boats I Find

Thanks Stead,
I just saw this one and posted a question about it. Starting to do a bit of research on the brand now. Google doesn't seem to have much on the topic. This boat is listed as a 56 and a 65? I think its a typo. If it had a mizzen mast and a shorter rig I would really love it. Maybe its a one off and that's the reason it is so inexpensive?

It appears to be a one off or custom built boat.
Those are common in metal boats, especially at this size and apparent quality of build (as judged by the photos only).

As I see it: The key points are to know the designer was a naval architect (trained and knowledgeable) and then that the boat was made to specs (not heavily modified by a builder or owner).

As for the length and why it may be listed two different lengths?
I see that from time to time, especially when a boat has a bowsprit. Some ads use the LOD (Length On Deck) and others LOA (Length Over All), and some may have both lengths mentioned in a description. Some may avoid including the bowsprit and davits on boats (which will cause higher slip fees).

The specifications I saw for the Niels Roos boat I posted above show:
"Model = 56'". (I see that as LOD)
LWL = 48'
(LOD) = 65' (assuming it is including the bowsprit)

The various terms can be confusing when one sees them used interchangeably (and sometimes incorrectly). Here is a wikipedia article that helps explain the terms and meaning.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Length_overall

Hope that helps.

Re: Outstanding Boats - A Special Selection of Unusual and Noteworthy Boats I Find

Phil Bolger PHUMA
___________________________

Steady's Notes

I am sharing this boat because it is outstanding in a few ways:
1. Designer = Phil Bolger, known for unusual designs (for a purpose)
2. Long, Narrow design 128' x 16'
3. Low Asking Price (unfinished interior, etc.)
4. Interesting Propulsion with prop on the rudder (see photo)
6. Designed for fuel efficiency and smaller engine
7. Contains some essentials (engine, hydraulics, windlass, galley, bow thruster, etc.)
8. Has tabernacle (lowering) masts for use with sails. Check out that mast rake!
9. Notice the photo where it is hauled out and in slings. Notice shallow draft.
10. While this boat is not for me, I wonder how this would work as a coastal cruiser, with liveaboard large family? (it has a lot of interior that could be modified/finished). Or as a "boatel" cruising San Francisco Bay and the Delta? Or if moved to the Atlantic, cruising the ICW.
11. Imagine how you would use her, and post in the comments below.
12. I like motorsailors and this one would be a sight to see with some large gaff rigged tan bark sails on her. (See photo that shows mizzen)

I would hate to have to clean the bottom, and one would want a large crew (or family) to keep up with the painting and chipping and painting, etc. Too much boat for a single guy like me.

As with any boat, a survey is a good idea. Caveat Emptor.

There are more photos showing the interior and engine and details on the linked page.

My Disclaimers and Requests

I have no financial or other connection to this boat or the seller.
I have not seen this boat in person, nor have I sailed on it.
As with any boat, it is a good idea to research the design to learn about how they sail, common problems and owner opinions.
As with any boat, it is smart to have a qualified yacht surveyor perform a survey of the boat to assess its condition.
I am posting this to help others find boats. This one caught my eye, and I hope this thread helps others find a good fit for them.
I hope this thread proves helpful to CF Members. If so, let me know, as it is nice to know the time spent on it has helped others.
IF you purchase this boat, let me know (a PM would be OK).
IF you purchase this boat, I would enjoy seeing it, or going for a sail on it, if I am ever in your area. Or, if you own a similar or sister boat send me a PM. I enjoy sailing on a wide variety of boats and would like to get some time on many designs, including this one.

Re: Outstanding Boats - A Special Selection of Unusual and Noteworthy Boats I Find

I don't remember to have post on this thread, mostly about old designs and old boats and it is not my cup of tea. However I would like to call Steadman attention for one of the boats that is least known and that even so is one that has one of the biggest resale values.

That is of course because some know the boat and those want it badly LOL.

While some design today boats that could have been designed 30 years ago, this is a boat designed 30 years ago and that could (almost) be designed today.

That and the fact that it is a bluewater offshore aluminium voyage boat is what make its resale value so good. Even so a good buy if the boat is in good condition. I am talking about the "Levrier des mers", a Finot design from the late 80s:

POLUX,
Thanks for adding that boat, and your good eye, to this topic or thread!

That is a very nice looking boat.
And I can see what you mean about it being a design that was "ahead of its time' or that has features now popular on fast European cruisers.
Many features are admirable (and the lines). I was particularly struck by the large dinghy/swim deck on the stern. The drawing shows the dinghy stored there.

I like the interior and the engine being where it is gives very good access to it.

More details:

Vessel used
Asking Price = 250.000 €
(VAT included )
Price was 300.000 €. Price dropped by 50.000 €

Steady, you have really outdone yourself this time. This is a great example of how truly creative Phil Bolger was. 126 feet long & just a 3.5 foot draft. Amazing. No one could think more outside the box than he did. His legacy lives on in the hundreds of boats built to his designs.

Yes in fact it works, I mean the dinghy garage:

The first boats in the late 80's were called "Levrier des Mers" some years later Finot designed a new interior, a revolutionary one, this one:

And that version, with the same hull was called Cigale. Both versions with design updates are still made today by Alubat, the ones that make the OVNIS.

The last versions are designed by Marc Lombard.
