Paul Erling Johnson Designs

I have just watched "Sailor" on Youtube. Can't find any drawings or plans of Johnson's designs.
Does anyone know of books or publications that have design and construction details of Venus or any other of his boats?

Re: Paul Erling Johnson Designs

I can't help you with finding his designs, but thank you for the post because I didn't know someone had made a movie about Johnson. I'll never forget meeting him 15 years ago, seeing this crazy haired old man wearing nothing but a sarong and rowing over to our boat. So glad that we invited him aboard and spent the next 8 hours drinking and hearing his incredible stories while he hit on my wife and we laughed and joked into the morning hours. When he finally got up to leave, seemingly no drunker than when he had arrived, I realized he had polished off a 1/5 of rum by himself. The next morning we were leaving, and he invited us over to his boat and gave us one of his paintings. We all get attached to our boats, but that boat was a part of him.
Meeting Johnson was kind of a surreal experience and I didn't think I would ever see or hear of him again, so the movie is both sad and heartwarming to watch.

Hi Wolterd,
Was there a post for sale on the web when you bought Norn? I am interested in seeing some details, pics & info on her & Bluevic. I know nothing about either boat.
I still have not found any tech drawings oe plans for any of his boats.

I just watched the Youtube movie a few minutes ago. I was wondering about his designs. If you find a reference please post. I'd also be interested.

Good to har from you. I hope she is serving you well.
At the time it was between Norn, and a steel Colvin schooner of much less displacement. I love it's ruggedness and shallow draft, though worry we may grow out of it as a family, Norn on the other hand has plenty of room to grow into.
I had just started new job and couldn't take the time to deliver from England to Canada, the Colvin was local and also a very fine vessel.

Do you have big cruising plans, or to use her locally? I'd love to do a couple of Atlantic circuits on a venus.

There are 2 new short videos on Youtube that mention a new book on Johnson's life - authored & published by some of his friends. Looks like a very detailed biography with lots of pics. Have just ordered a copy.

Re: Paul Erling Johnson Designs

Just to make this thread complete, I'm the one who ended up with Bluevic (renamed back to original name Kwela).
Don't know of a book with the designs but if you come across one then I'll be glad to know about them. We do have the designs on paper but sadly partially waterlogged.
What's the book's name on his life?

I was lucky enough to meet Paul in English Harbour back in the 70’s, there were some interesting characters around in those days. !!
