Re: Please help

Another consideration is whether there are other similar boats in the area.

If so, then you will have access to advice and guidance as you learn.

Re: Please help

As was mentioned earlier, all you need to do is get the Hull Identification Number (HIN) off the boat.

It's usually on the stern or near there.

That will tell you the boat's Manufacturer, type, year and month built, and it's serial number.

Next you can do a search online and look at all the images of boats that are the same year and manufacturer as your boat is once you get the Hull ID Number and look it up

Here's a breakdown on an Islander 36 HIN

I just purchased an I-36 and find the hull number XLY366201181-1-82. The 3 may be a B. What can anyone tell me about the boat from this?

Ken & Monica:

To answer your questions, the XYL366201181 1-82 breaks down like this:

XYL = Islander Yacht Inc.
36 = 36 ft.
620 = hull number (620th I-36 built)
1181 = hull laid up in November 81 and 1-82 = Date completed.

The Pathfinder is a Volkswagen diesel engine. They are still in business. They are headquartered in Montreal and their phone number is: 514-695-6676. You can call and talk to John Schrer. He can advise you on anything you want to know about that engine. Give him the serial number (on plate, on port side, inside engine housing).

Good Luck,

Harry Farrell, Pacific High,

Something not right there. The HIN has only 12 characters with the option of a 2 letter country code prefix. Those last three characters are not permitted.

It's not rocket science.

My boat's HIN number is BTY273350774 (12 characters)

Bristol 27, S/N: 335, built in July 1974.

Once he knows the year and model he can do a search online to view other boats of the same model and year.

Many do this daily when looking at boats

Take a chill pill.

You're a foreigner and don't know US standard format for Hull ID Numbers.

This from Pearson:

The HIN is a 12 digit serial number that uniquely identifies a boat. It is analogous to a VIN on a motor vehicle registration. The HIN is normally used during the boat registration process .......

https://www.pearsonyachts.org/hull-i...on-number.html

12-Digit Number Standard

In the USA the federal regulations prescribe the standard format of the 12 alpha-numeric characters

What in my post is incorrect. ?

Transport Canada has a memorandum of understanding with USCG regarding Title 33 of the Code of Federal Regulations. We use the same law. When this law was gazzeted I trained the TC inspectors.

I am quite familiar with the law and have a copy of the relevant sections on my desk. Perhaps you like to look them up yourself and then explain that illegal HIN/MIC I was talking about. You may look up the requirements in CFR Title 33, Subpart C or ...
You could look at the explantion of the four different HIN codes on my website http://www.pcmarinesurveys.com/Whats%20a%20HIN%20.htm

The reason I mentioned it was to help the OP become more informed through facts although I do appreciate your difficulty with those.
