Re: Production ''blue water'' boats which have sailed oeans

A Good sailor can take any boat anywhere , But to give credit to what boat got all of us off the couch ? Starting in the 70 's there are many, but the one that doesn't get enough credit - is ----- Westsail 32 ----- . as in , they had a great advertising campaign " WESTSAIL THE WORLD " Look in the back ground of any photo and there will be a Westsail 32 . It's not the way boats are built today , but they are still a great boat and reasonably priced .
Having worked for , Westsail , Valiant , La' Fete , Hans Christian , Crealock 37 in Costa Mesa California back in the 70 " s there is one thing I can say ! We have no teak on our Seawind 1160 Cat !!! Dave , Commodore San Pedro Yacht Club , S/Cat Bama Breeze .

Well the WS32 did get some credit. Back in the 70's a good friend of mine and his wife were living aboard and working for Westsail and they were featured in Time magazine as being on the cutting edge of a new lifestyle choice pictures and all. I think that older sailors such as myself remember the effect of the WS32 quite well. These days of course few would even be aware of it. They certainly did well in their hayday.

I mean these one which are from shipyards of mass production , not HR, Discovery etc.

I try to choose some boat and would get some names to choose from.

My plan is to buy just hull, and upgrade to my needs (solars, extra tank, desaltor, etc. In fact just hull and rigging (more or less) I need in length of 44-48 feet.
That list would probably include every sailboat boat on the market.

Not every boat on the market is in current production, and even the other requirements limit the supply.

Well every boat is not that far off. We've seen Cal 25's and Catalina 27's circumnavigate, currently Web Chiles is sailing a little Moore 24 around the world and there has been plywood 20 foot somethings cross oceans plus little muti's so ya, almost anything built including anything built today by the high production builders. Now that doesn't mean that anyone can do it in any area it just means some have done it. Some were great sailors and others were just lucky, depends where you fit in. If you stay in the low latitudes it certainly helps your chances with marginally built boats.

That is true, just about anything can cross oceans but don't let the crowd here know that, they might hurt themselves.

Or if their wives find out, so much for the "gotta have this" line....

True, but taking it away reduces boating accidents significantly, and if the rumors are correct, it is being considered by governments in several nations.
