Re: Recommendation for a good GPS Chart Plotter

For my son's sailboat we bought him a stand-alone Garmin unit with GPS pickup within it and pre-loaded with charts in the $500 range, no depth. For depth reading we bought a single digital readout gauge with a shoot threw transducer also inexpensive and independent of GPS.

I like the Garmins too, because they are intuitive and easy to use. But if you want to take time to actually read the manual, Raymarine and Furuno are fine.

A backup unit on a pc or iPad is fine, but don't throw away your paper charts.

Re: Recommendation for a good GPS Chart Plotter

I like having a dedicated Depth display, so no matter what you are doing on the plotter you have the depth available. There is not much to them and you can mount the transducer in a reservoir rather than through the hull. I've done this on two of my boats.

Also look for used plotter-gps packages, people as re always upgrading. I got a Raymarine C70 and radar some years ago for 800.
