Yes, that's possible, and if a trailer sailor it could explain the lack of a visible keel. However, it appears kinda big to be a trailer sailor.

They sure must have suction cups on their bums!

From reading the Farr X2 website, it appears that this is likely hull #1, Nexba. She's around 30 feet LOA, very light and with a deep and rather skinny bulb keel, noticeably missing at the time of rescue. Lots of talk of potential performance, not much about offshore capabilities!

Doubtless, more to follow.

Jim

PS the following was posted on 4 May: "Over the coming week Nexba will be IRC and ORC rated, and progress through proper offshore sea trials in readiness for the racing season ahead."

Or maybe not...

And now another, this one is a tad further north and is a bloody great ship, apparently laying to two anchors after losing power in heavy seas.

Maybe doing some heavy weather testing? The boat is said to be a contender for 2-handed category in the Sydney to Hobart Race.

Crazy weather to be out in, forecast for the whole of southern New South Wales has been bad for days before this. Another problem at the moment just north of where this happened as coal carrier Portland Bay is without power and was drifting towards shore. Anchors have slowed this down, tugboat on scene by tow line parted. Two more tugs on the way.

Very good article, does not really seem to be the appropriate vessel for the conditions to be very honest, especially when it was brand new and hardly tested and the first one made.

Re: Rescue off NSW South Coast Australia

News report mentions that they were doing okay until about 0100, when they inverted...cant imagine dealing with seas, dark, and inverting....assuming both were in the cockpit, but will be curious to find out more detail...just sailed out and back to bermuda from guilford, ct, timing our passage with the Newport to Bermuda race. We had some "sporty" weather (newport lingo not mine) going south recording routine 20-25k winds w/ occasional 40k gusts, and 8-10ft seas...with a few "fire drills" during some of our night watches... but inverting would be a completely new level of urgency..glad to see they were rescued.

Never underestimate the value of the pucker factor, especially if inverted...

Re: Rescue off NSW South Coast Australia

There was also a rescue of two men off the coast of Noosa Heads. Apparently delivering a houseboat somewhere to the north. Not a good time of year to be going into the open sea in a houseboat.

You nailed it.

I’m thinking that there was a shaft drive and a hole or whatever was left when the keel fell off to hold on to. I assume the two rudders would have been too far aft to be viable for holding on.

Really great that neither person was trapped below or by the rigging. Wow.

Certainly makes me reconsider auto inflators on our PFDs!

For the pucker factor to get a grip, you need a nice smooth surface to sit on, not something with a hole in it
