Riding Sail at Anchor

Our Beneteau Oceania 43 swings around more than a lot of other boats whilst at anchor. We were anchored next to an Oceanis 46 that was moving around just as much (the owner didn’t admit it, but that’s another story!), so it is a bit of a design thing.

I’ve been thinking about getting/making a riding sail - an Amel 55 nearby last night had a small bit of its mizzen sail out and looked remarkably stable. I was thinking of attaching the head to the topping lift, the clew to the end of the boom and the tack somewhere on the boom or somehow back to the mast (we have in-mast furling).

I’ve searched and found a US supplier of these, ready made, but the price seems high. I may try and make one from a second hand sail. Does anyone have any ideas about this?

I found one on eBay for a reasonable price. It seems many people buy them but never use them. Make sure you calculate the sail area you need; big variances in available sizes.

I made a v twin a while ago which seemed to set ok but never got a chance to see how it did in the first big blow, good idea to tie off the wind gen before setting it up......
