Question Sabre 28 Repower

I have a 1979 Sabre 28. My Volvo diesel is worn out. The Yard wants $5k to replace it with a rebuild.
Anyone tried an external bracket and outboard?
Thanks,
Sabre Rich

Saw it tried on a 28' Tartan (?) and the owner hated how the 15 hp longshaft OB prop would come out of the water and immediately redline when the load was taken off the prop. He had the kind of articulating mount that would lower the outboard well below it's cavitation plate, just too much fore & aft rocking, I guess. Original plan was to shift gears and throttle at the motor, but that was too awkward when docking with (wheel) steering. He added cockpit controls, but eventually unloaded the boat and let someone else deal with it. Additionally, the lower ouput of of the OB alternator vs the Atomic 4 was problem.

Steve,
I was worried about that. Smaller boats seem to do fine. I would expect the long shaft would keep the prop under water, guess not.
I would think if I could have enough throw in the bracket, I could keep the OB prop just as low as the Inboard.

The inboard prop is just behing the keel. Perhaps the rocking would still allow the OB prop (all the way aft) to come out of water. Any further lowering, might get the actual engine cover underwater on opposite rock and roll.
Thanks,
Sabre Rich

That's the bad news, Rich. The good news is that you've been given a pretty good price for a rebuilt Volvo diesel. It won't raise the resale value of the boat that muchm but putting an outboard on it would tank your investment.

3GM 30F...............

The year is 1992. Has a bit over 1200 hours on it. Includes the Gear/Transmission. I will be out of town/country starting on Monday. Gone for about 2 weeks. There will be limited opportunity to check e-mails or the forum............but I will do my best.
