Sailboat for year round sailing in Europe with dogs

Hi all,

We are looking for options for a sailboat that will mostly be used for journeys across Netherlands and Europe with 4 hours (dogs) trips during the whole year.

Some nice to haves:
  • Low maintenance
  • Suitable for high altitudes
  • Suitable for large dogs
  • Suitable for shallow water
  • Robust in a technical regard
  • Minimalist/simple

Some could haves:
  • Easy to manoeuvre
  • Beaching possible
  • Light interior
  • Shower

Some facts:
  • 2 Persons
  • 2 Dogs
  • Budget less than 100.000
  • Location: Europe

We have been looking at Ovnis, Southerly and the likes.

Any experiences and suggestions for these requirements?

Including mandatory dog picture to show how capable they are on the water

Re: Sailboat for year round sailing in Europe with dogs

Just want to wish you the best of luck in your search and journey. I too will be cruising with my two dogs, Australian Shepherd siblings, but will be a solo sailor. I will be Florida USA based but plan on venturing into the Caribbean after a season or two of experience with near coastal trips. I’m likely 6 months away from a purchase as I see my wife thru her final months. Click image for larger version

What a rollercoaster you must be going through

For me, the support you can get from man's best friend is worth gold and looking at the picture you've got that part covered. Wishing you and your wife all the best from the other side of the ocean!

You are probably set on a monohull but in case you are not, there are many older catamarans that will tick those requirements. For the dogs is a lot easier a stable platform.

Here is a very good link as a suggestion

Thanks for that! I am more familiar with monohulls, but you're absolutely right in that a catamaran might be easier for dogs, getting on the boat and into the cabin! Gonna browse to link and have a good look around

My Newick trimaran is very suitable. I have sailed thousands of miles, usually with 2 dogs. The solid wing is ideal and fits your requirements except my shower is a garden watering can in the cockpit.
Not for sale at the moment but will be at some stage.Click image for larger version

You say "journeys across Netherlands and Europe". Does it mean you plan to travel on the canals? If so, you are limited in boat size by the size of the locks. https://improvesailing.com/questions...ize-per-region. What is your nationality if visa and other permits are required? Thanks for replying! I am from the Netherlands, so the canals are familiar (and not high on the list for travelling, more the lakes and coast for now).

My parents on the other hand love them and are currently underway (and even they could not get past one fixed bridge ):

The shower was already on the nice to have list, so thanks for the fresh (non-monohull) perspective. I have a look at the berthing cost for these but they do fit the bill in many ways!
