Re: Sailboat with 6'8" Headroom

Thanks for the info ! I've got a lot to look at and think about. I don't know anything about one off's or even who to talk to about such an endeavor ! It may very well be out of my budget though. I'm trying to stay in the $750,000 range.

If that's in your budget, they're beasts! A ketch is no harder to sail, in fact, the sail layout gives you a lot more flexibility in heavy weather, and with an amel you dont leave the cockpit to do a thing. You could do a whole lot worse than that boat... oh, did i mention our PO converted our aft cabin bed into a single king size bed? Seriously, you could sleep michael jordan in there.... as it is, the three of us and three cats fill it up just right

Re: Sailboat with 6'8" Headroom

In my search for the "right" vessel, I've read several blogs on catamarans. I've never thought about a large cat before. Reading about the Lagoon 500. Can't seem to find any information on headroom height though.

Re: Sailboat with 6'8" Headroom

My first thought on headroom was the Amel Super Maramu also. I'm 6'2" and only found the passageway to the aft cabin tight for headroom (I had to crouch slightly). However one consideration for your size would be the passageway doors in the watertight bulkheads. They're actually smaller than typical (both lower and narrower).

Even at 6'2" and about 230 lbs I often found myself bumping shoulders (and occasionally my forehead) as I ducked through the bulkhead doors. I also found the aft bunk just enough for myself. At 6'8" you'd be sleeping diagonally on the aft bunk. That works if you're by yourself...... I think you'd want to check one out personally before getting too invested in the design. The trade-off for that is an engine room that a large person can actually get access to everything without being a contortionist!

For your budget, I'd look at a larger Waterline (very well built steel, fabricated in Vancouver). I've been on a couple of 50+' Waterlines and they were raised saloon designs with massive headroom. I think you'd also find a number of catamarans with pretty good headroom, particularly under the aft hard tops on the larger ones where you spend 90% of your time in the tropics.....

Looking around at specs on Cat's, looks like the Leopard 58 may have the most headroom overall !

Re: Sailboat with 6'8" Headroom

My Delta 46 (known as Liberty 458) is a 6'9'' headroom. Range is into $ 200,000 for very well manteined 1990's. They have luxury interiors in solid teak like cabo rico or little harbor
