Couple of suggestions

I started sailing as a member of a local sailing club, and they had a fleet of Pearson 26's. Great little boat - surprisingly fast, uncomplicated (outboard motor), strong little boat. My first boat (that I bought/owned) was a 1978 O'Day 27 that I bought for $6,500. We had a blast with that thing. It had a single cylinder 8hp Yanmar which was nice because it got me familiar with the maintainance of an inboard diesel engine.

Alberg, Pearson, you said you wanted a cruiser. Read some issues of 'Good Old Boat'

Also, take a look at the MacGregor 26. Either the x or m model. They are good starter boats in that with the large outboard you can get out of and correct many mistakes.

Where are you located? if you are on the East coast, I can direct you to some places where you can pick up very good small boats at very good prices..
If you are on the west coast..... sorry...
