Securing Lines to Mast

I have a couple of spare halyards with snap shackles that I want to secure to my mast. Would attaching a simple pad eye to the mast to clip them to be the best solution?
Thx

The best solution is to take them out to the lifelines and clip them out there.

If you clip it to the mast it’s going to make noise and drive you and your neighbors insane.

IMO pad eyes are EXACTLY what's needed :-) Put a little tension on the falls and the shackles will stay quiet enuff. Should they rattle a bit even with tension on the falls, you can always lay a frapping on them with a bit of cod line. Just a simple clove hitch will do.

I always carry a few short lengths of cod line in my pocket for just such purposes.

Re: Securing Lines to Mast

To keep things organized, I bring shackle ends to the same cleats that I use for the halyards, so if I do need to use one I don't have to fuss around finding the other end. In a marina I bundle all lines on the side of the mast with a loop of bungee and pull them off the mast to a lower shroud to avoid slapping.

Thanks. I should have mentioned that this is for while underway. When tied up I do clip them to the lifelines.

I would not keep them against the mast underway either.

I connect spare halyards to the chain plates, never know when a side stay may give way.

of course every rig is a little different, but I have never had any problems with a halyard interfering. They are narrower than the shrouds. So they don’t get involved in any of the sail controls.

Not at the mast. Do you have granny bars or an inboard handrail? Those are where I put them: wrap around and shackled to itself or I have a soft shackle hanging on the railing to clip them to.

Re: Securing Lines to Mast

Underway, on this boat, there is a pad eye to which we secure the spinnaker halyard. On our previous boat, there was a s/s bale at the bottom of the mast where we secured all the halyards while underway. One tensions them a bit so they don't thump and bang.

+1 for Ann's solution. Something like these bails https://www.dwyermast.com/items.asp?...milyName=Bails would be just as easy to install as a padeye but would provide room for multiple halyards or for hitching sail ties or other things. You could make one up yourself with some SS rod. A large enough one would hold the halyards away from the mast so they would slap less. Our boat has a bail located just above the partners where we clip the spinnaker halyards, the extra jib halyard and the spinnaker pole topping lift when they're not being used.
