Re: Self feathering prop

There are several manufacturers and generations of feathering props. It would be helpful if you could provide a photo or the name of the manufacturer.

A little punctuation would be nice too.

You probably did not put it together correctly. Find proper directions and follow them when you take it apart/reassemble again.

PYI has some excellent videos about installing and setting the pitch on a Max Prop. Sounds like you would do well to watch them.

Re: Self feathering prop

If its a MaxProp, there is a LOT more to getting it back together than matching the numbers. All those letters need to be lined up properly to get the blades at the right pitch and direction. You'll need to start over.

This time read the instructions... And hopefully you have some idea what pitch you actually want them set at...

Re: Self feathering prop

For future reference, if it’s a MaxProp you don’t have to take the prop apart to grease it. There are two grease ports on the side of the body labeled ‘Grease’. Take out the sealing plug (small Allen key) and replace with a grease nipple. Attach a grease gun and pump until grease comes out the seams. Can even be done underwater.

Re: Self feathering prop

Most feathering props can be set up for left hand drive or right hand drive. Sounds like you set it up for the wrong drive direction. Please don't ask how I know.

It sounds like he just threw it together. iI’s 50/50 on the rotation direction. The odds are much, much worse for the pitch setting. In fact it’s very likely that he doesn’t have a consistent pitch on all three blades.

That's so the prop can have 3 different RPMs at which it is most efficient, right?

Older MaxProps did not have the grease ports and after that some had unlabeled grease ports. Look for two M6 set screws in the center hub. Those are the grease ports. Remove the set screws and install Zerc fittings apply the grease. Put the set screws back when finished.

My 1985 MaxProp did not have this feature. I copied a neighbor's MaxProp to add it. Huge improvement in servicing. Especially if you have a three blade that needs three hands to assemble.
