Re: sleep while sailboat heels

Our old Morgan had a lee board stowed behind the port salon berth. When needed this slipped into a groove at each end to make a narrow sea berth. It was narrow enough that your shoulders touched both sides so there was no rolling around and no tensing of muscles at each roll. I had Many great nights of sleep here while off watch in rough passages. We hot bunked it for each watch.

New idea if you're one person in a king on a large sailboat. Put in some wooden structures that make the mattress like a curved skateboarding ramp. Then there's a place on the mattress to sleep no matter the heel angle of the boat.

Typically, you will have twin mattresses rather than one large one. Rig a lee cloth from between the two mattresses up to the roof. When not needed, it will just tuck down under one of the mattresses.

Like the chief said, the Navy teaches one to sleep anywhere. Just not on watch.

Don't forget to sleep with your feet to the bow when underway.

In Boot Camp in 1961 I had the 04:00 to 08:00 Clothes-Line Watch. I had leaned up against the Clothes-Line-Post to "Just rest my weary eyes a few winks", however, I fell dead asleep. When I awoke with my head hanging down, the first thing I saw was a pair of Brown Shoes. Thinking quickly I said "Amen" and looked up into Chief Magnum's eyes. He could not stop himself from grinning like an old mule eating briars. When he had wiped the tears from his eyes and recovered his composure he said; "Freeman that is the best damn lie I have ever heard in my Naval Career. You got away with it this time, but if ever again I catch you sleeping on watch I will have you keel hauled."
