Re: Solar set up, Catalina 22

Hello….

This is my first post on this forum. I have a 1974 Catalina 22 and bought a 100 ah LifePo battery for it with the intention of running solar. Looking for any advice on what size panel to use, how to mount it on this boat and which controller…. I did previously have a bank of three lead acid batteries with a 50 amp panel and cheap controller but didn’t like the panel mounting and wanted to get rid of the extra weight. Thanks in advance for any tips!

Patrick,

Welcome.

Exactly what are you wanting to power on your Catalina 22'?

Express 24 hour consumption in amp-hrs if you can.

Any other means of charging (from outboard, for example). If so, how often do you plan on running it and what is its amp output?

There are no other sources of power. Not sure on the amp-hours, but all lights have been converted to LED. I run a VHF radio, Sirius XM, charge phones and iPad, etc. We do occasional overnights on the boat. Thanks,

Patrick

There is no refrigeration, A/C, TV’s, coffe pots, heaters, etc. Pretty much just typical low-draw items.

If you have no fridge or other high draw items, I think your 50 watt panel would be fine. Your 100AH Lifepo should last you several days if you have occasionally have a couple days off for it to recharge. My 100AH lifepo will last me 3 days with a small fridge.

Thanks. Is there any particular charge controller you would recommend?

Definitely the Victron 75/10 or 75/15. They are inexpensive, work great with Lifepo batteries, easy to install, and can handle more than enough power for your boat.

If you want a charge monitor, a cheap hall effect one will probably be close enough, I've used this one and it is OK.

But if you want accuracy, get the Victron smart shunt.
