I grew up sailing with my Dad, we had everything from 16' cats to a Columbia 28' and even built is own Tri. Grew up sailing on Lake St. Clair and some of the inland lakes here in south east Michigan.

Just got back from Puerto Rico where we chartered a 50' sailboat w/captain Dan and it really renewed my love of sailing.

Now married with 4 boys I would like to get back into it and would like some recommendations on a boat as well as where to sail. I am familiar with the Columbia's, C&C and Irwins a little.

Really looking for a STABLE boat, something the family will enjoy, no need for speed as I will never race but something with a larger then average cockpit the cruises well and can be mainly single handled. I will teach and eventually have help from the wife and boys.

In order to get the most out of the boat I plan either to sail Lake Erie or Lake St. Clair as both are close to us...preference? One better the other for "exploring"

First decide how much you want to spend, then see what's around in your price range in your general area. Go look at them, and bear in mind, the kids will soon take up more room than they do now. Sailing could get old really fast if your wife is relegated to child care and no play. FWIW.
