"Battling 9 foot seas and 40 knots?" Doesn't sound right to me.

Sounds right to me... serious bit of fetch in Magdalena and a nasty short steep sea can build very quickly

I think he is in Canal Magdalena somewhere.... it can look like this ( 1 .. Monte Sarmiento from the west ) or it can look like this ( 2 and 3 ... 3 is a bit of a crib... that is actually Cockburn... a bit to the south... on Christmas Eve).

I hope he is OK.

Re: Southern cross in serious trouble

It wasn't really the weather that did him in.It was the kelp around the southern islands.Where his chart indicated clear sailing he got bogged down in kelp that he could not overpower. As a result he became a sitting duck for the enduring bad weather.
Please read on to update #6.

Re: Southern cross in serious trouble

I am glad this guy is safe and sound. Hope he gets his boat but I can't imagine that his boat would be recoverable after slamming into rocks so bad he was forced to swim an hour.

As a side note, I come to this forum for relaxing and enjoying reading something other than the crappy political news. Critique people about their spelling and grammar all you want but I hope you realize that it takes away from the enjoyment some get here. Calling out a good chunk of people who support this forum "25%" by coming here and contributing to topics is kind of counterproductive. Just my .00005 cents, do as you will.

Those are some nasty lenticular clouds. I can imagine the havoc they wreak on the surrounding sea.

Crazy story, and talk about courage. If I can still sail it...

Re: Southern cross in serious trouble

No more dangerous than many other places.... there is a good chance she will be salvaged and taken back to Punta Arenas at minimal cost.

He may have trouble getting another zarpe however.... and it is getting late in the season.

Re: Southern cross in serious trouble

Folks, I have cleaned up the thread to keep it on topic which I for one find quite interesting in his battles with the Cape.

Watson, thanks for the links and updates, if you could type in upper and lower case it just makes reading your posts easier on the eye, thanks.

Peter
