Yes, as it depends how far below the waterline the through hull is. On bigger boats it's more gushing than on a 27 footer. For me it's usually less than half a bucket, sponged up pretty quickly and easily.

I do it like Meirribi explained. Pull paddlewheel, place palm of hand over thru hull, at your leisure insert dummy plug. Much less water than trying to quickly swap one for the other.

In other words, don't lean too closely over the through hull when you do it . Even harder to do quickly with a face full of water.

Forget Crisco and magic sex jellies. Go to your local hardware store and buy a tiny container of Danco waterproof grease. Smear a thin coating on the paddlewheel housing (not the paddlewheel) and the dummy plug including the O rings. Plumbers use this stuff and it's safe for O rings. It also won't wash off. It will last the season. The little container will last a lifetime.
