Re: Standing rigging puzzle

Not far off topic, good idea I think too. Does anyone use Hi-Mods? I have a Stay-loc but I have heard good things about Hi-Mods too.

We rerigged in Tahiti last year and used Hi mods - Very easy to use and almost 100% fool proof. Much easier than the norsemans that I replaced which were 35-40 years old.

But the hi-mod insulators are so much heavier that if I did it again would probably not use them.

Good luck

Re: Standing rigging puzzle

Some of the wires in the images appear to have slight rust staining where the wire enters the swaged fitting, this is a bad sign. My experience with failed stays is that the wire cracked inside the end of the swage where it transitions from being multi strand wire into a solid bar due to the swaging process. All of the failed wires showed rust at the failure points.

When I serviced the rigging on my previous boat I cut the swaged ends off and used the extended stud Stay-locs on the old wire which I knew to be very good quality wire rather than replace it with wire which might have been manufactured at low cost in Asia somewhere and of uncertain quality.

I did a partial re-rig with Nico press and 5,000 miles later they were still fine. Your Vega is a little lighter than the Contessa so you might consider Nico press and be able to carry spare sleeves and the tool for very little cost. Just another decision to think about. ____Grant.

Thanks, that's a very interesting tidbit from someone who has been there and done that on a boat even smaller than ours.

Not off topic at all! My original question has been answered, so if you or anyone else wants to talk about replacement standing rigging, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Re: Standing rigging puzzle

I had a group of young Swedes crossing the Atlantic this spring. Boat was around the same age.

They asked "does the rigging look ok": yes

"Should it be replaced at 30 y/o": yes

In the end we replaced the lower threaded as many had a threaded cold headed piece thru a bent strap. All original Hasselfors stuff and the backstay which had a small thimble nicropressed at the top end. Making a split backstay with one wire!

There were on a budget and their US visa expired in 2 days!
