Swapping winches, need advice!

Hello sailing community. I’m tossing around the idea of swapping out my older Barient 32 winches for some new self tailing winches. Can anyone offer up some advice as to what brand they would choose and what size they would get that’s equivalent to the Barient 32’s I have now? These are for my headsail sheets and the sail area is around 420 sq ft.

Thanks!

Anderson winches for sure. I’m pretty sure model numbering is the same as for your Barient winches but make sure. You can always go up one size if you always felt that a bigger winch would help you.

Another vote for Andersen. Swapped out older Barient-style for these self tailers. One of the best upgrades we've made. They have a good sizing chart chart online:

It always helps to tell us what boat you sail and where. Add this to your signature and the quality of answers will improve!

Also, are you happy with the power ratio? Tastes vary, but 32s seem a little small. You might be happier with a 40-42.

You are looking at two different winch power standards. Older winches like Barient's numbers don't transfer to newer winches. Here is a comparison chart that might help

Yup, 47:1 seems about right.

Re: Swapping winches, need advice!

Thanks for the advice, everyone! Looking at the Andersen size chart I can go with the 46 or 50 and that will Put me at either a 47:1 or 49:1 power ratio. This is the last project in bringing the ol’ Gal back to life! ...until the next project

Re: Swapping winches, need advice!

Another approach might be to contact Arco-Hutton winches in Sydney, Australia. IIRC they have conversion kits to put Barient type spring jaw self tailers on older Barient models. I know they do for their own winches, and I recall the other, but not sure.

And while I really like Anderson winches, the older bronze Barients (like the 32s and 28s on our boat are superb machines and will last forever... so worth preserving if possible.

We have all Barient winches on board, they are indeed simple and solid. Our primaries are their biggest, 36st, and secondaries are 32st. They use the same paws and springs as Lewmar (who I believe bought them out or patents?). Arco Hutton has the rights to make Barient parts so definitely give them a call. You could literally save thousands by just getting new drums or a self tailing kit. Comparable primaries to out 36st is a few grand a piece and Andersons, while amazing winches, are on the pricer side of the bunch. With Andersons, you do get what you pay for, they are smooth and they just look wonderful.

Another vote for Anderson, these last forever.

Otherwise, I like the new Seldén winches. But, in the end, most brand manufacturers make good winches,

Re: Swapping winches, need advice!

Reading all these comments, I would surely try to find out more about the conversion of current Barient winches. They are better than most ones on the market today and it must save a lot compared to new Andersen winches

Hard Right Rudder -
I may have some slightly used self tailing winches that I removed from a FARR36 that I owned. They were designed for running backstays, but we moved the leads to the main winches which made these winches dead weight on the back deck. The winches are in my garage in New Orleans. I can send you photos, if you wish...
Please e-mail me at chris@sowalls.com if you are interested.

Has anyone used Winchmate.com for the conversions to self tailing?

Re: Swapping winches, need advice!

Here is another request for a similar opinion. We have a 1980 Tartan 37C. We sail in the Great South Bay off of the south shore of Long Island, Chesapeake bay and north to Maine, all coastal, no water sailing">blue water sailing.
I have had 2 rotatory cuff surgeries and my right arm will never be the same as for strength. I had been a very powerful man in the past, benching over 300 and very much in "fit" condition. The surgeries and rehab have killed my old arm strength.
We presently have Lew-mar 44 St for the Genoa. What is your opinion for replacement winches taking into consideration my lack of arm strength?
