I am looking to buy a Sweden 36 to 38 from the eighties. Has anybody experience with these ships ? Seems to be good quality and fast ?

Lots and lots of teak on the deck! Make sure it has been replaced!

Well built quality boats. Make sure the boats have not been hard grounded.

Well, not necessarily, I bought a 1996 Hallberg Rassy that had spent every winter, Oct 01 to May 01 in a heated hangar. The Decks on my boat are now of course silver but plenty off wood left. No buckling, no dark spots all the bungs in place. Yes they did re-caulk a couple of years ago. I would say for Nordic boats, how have they been stored and maintained and of cours check for grounings.... the rocks will win every time.

Good luck

PS: if you can read Swedish most boats in Sweden are listed at Blocket.se

Hi tx for your reply. I have a Dehler 34 now and am looking for a more comfortable and seaworthy ship for cruising solo to uk, scandinavia. My D34 is seaworthy, fast and easy to handle solo, but not so comfortable, more a cruiser/racer. Is a Sweden as fast, can I easily handle a 36 to 38 foot solo ? What are the plus and min points ? Heard about keel problems with Sweden 38 yachts ?
I would appreciate your experiences. Best regards, Jean

Any yacht can have problems with the keel if grounded and not repaired or if it sails for a considerable time with a keel with the bolts lose. Years ago a Sweden 42 lost a keel but the boat had been grounded and obviously not well repaired.

Well, SW36 is not super fast compared to more recent designs but I think it sails rather well. I use hydraulic autopilot almost all the time when sailing and I find it easy to balance the sails.

I have sailed her singlehanded many times. The free board is quite high which can be a bit problematic when docking alongside. I have installed midships cleats to help docking to finger pontoons etc.

The boat is very spacious from inside. There is good headroom from aft cabin to forward cabin including the head and shower, which makes the living on the boat very enjoyable. Only negative point is that the access to cabin from outside is very steep because of the U-shaped bench in the cockpit.

I haven't had any issued with the keel other than I had to re-laminate the seem between the keel and keelbox. This was only cosmetic issues...

There are some photos on my blog with is in Finnish that you might find interesting:

Nice boat

15 years ago the Sweden 42 was on of my preferred yacht. What a beauty and what a great interior. Just incredible and almost as incredibly expensive. LOL
