Swedish designed Karlskrona-Viggen

Hi freetime or anyone else,

I was wondering what you can tell me about this type of boat. There is one being given away in New York, USA, and I want to go get it.

Here is a link:

Free: 22 ft. full keel sailboat

Thank you very much.

Re: Swedish designed Karlskrona-Viggen

What can you tell me about the condition?

The craigslist ad has been down for a while. Is it even still available?

Thank you.

Re: Swedish designed Karlskrona-Viggen

Hi true
I dabble in boats (it's a curse) and this one is right up the road so I couldn't resist. It's not in terrible shape. Yard was friendly and let me climb aboard and left me alone. Neglected and closed up for oh, 2-3 years. No mildew or rot but standing water up to the sole. Seems sound. Good woodwork. Fairly well taken care of before that. Still there last I looked a week ago...probably because it's such a problem to move....but she would launch and sail as is.The hull is beautiful, faired, smooth, ready for paint. Rigging is intact, seems rather lightweight for a heavy keelboat...sort of Catalina 22 quality. No biggie. An easy restoration IMHO. Some nice info on a restoration online

Biggest beef--the deck is sagging ever so slightly (probably an inch, can't tell from topside) from the lack of a compression post, and the support below, fiberglass encased wood, is delaminating. This could be repaired easily if you wanted to put in a post, I think, but....a rebuild would be work work work. Doable. Could be sailed as is I suppose. You could stand a post right on the keel and be done with it...but you'd have to squeeze around it to get to the V berth. Not much room there.

Sails are unknown but in the bags, below. seems to be a spinnaker too. Some nice canvas on deck...newish bimini...this boat obviously had been loved at one time. Deck seems solid. No obvious soft spots but I didn't really check that carefully. Don't know the history or former owners. Very few of these boats around, but there's an old hippy up the river that has one and posts some nice pics. Most of the online poop is Swedish. About 300 built, first by Karlskona, like this one I believe, then by Albin. Seem to have a good rep abroad.

Good luck

Pete

Whatever it is this (stAmped karlskrona viggen) has a long keel, slightly cutaway.

In any event, I didn't say it had a full keel. Just. Heavy one.

Karlskrona Viggen has a similar keel configuration as the Vega 27, and the same designer. When Albin took over Viggen they changed to fin keel.

BluePeter,

Thank you very, very much for all the information. You mentioned someone who has one and has posted pictures. Where are these posted? Do you know if he has a trailer for it?

Thanks again.

Re: Swedish designed Karlskrona-Viggen

I went to look at one of those a couple of months ago. It looked like it had been a nice little blue water boat at one time, but it had suffered too much abuse for me to consider it a viable project.

It was kind of narrow, & it had a keel hung rudder that looked like it would drag heavily if you did not have your sails balanced properly, but I still liked it. It had a novel sort of variable pitch prop on it that I found interesting.

Apparently it's bow design is a common thing in Scandinavia, where, I am told, it is somewhat common to walk off the bow to a rock pile & set a shore anchor.

BluePeter,

I saved a picture of this boat before the Craigslist ad expired and it looks like the boat is missing its rudder. Is the rudder there?

Thanks.

Re: Swedish designed Karlskrona-Viggen

Hi all,

The Viggen at the boatyard in Verplanck is still available and it is not missing its rudder (it has an inboard, attached rudder that is visible in the picture if you look closely).

My husband and I keep our sailboat at the same yard and we're trying to help them find a good home for it. The boat may be moved out of the yard soon and destroyed if nobody wants it. If you know anyone who might be interested, please ask them to contact me. There are two people nearby who handle small boat transport for very reasonable prices.

Here's a link to the ad we place in Good Old Boat magazine Good Old Boat - Fixer-Upper Sailboats
