If you really want to take on a boat wich has been given up by somebody else, try to find out why they were'nt able to fix it. if you are offered a boat for cheap by people who are in a better position to fix it than you, run!

If you are set on a fixer-upper, find one on land, with sound rigging and deck hardware.
Electronics and such is most likely obsolete anyway, it's not worth paying for 20 year old electronics even if it's working. if something goes, you have to fix it yourself, find used parts, or do a major refit.

Boats that the previous owner has put it on land to fix a problem, and never got it done, can be great deals.
