Question Tanks a lot

I'm fitting out my 44' Lancer motorsailer to a bluewater liveaboard and would appreciate some input on a freshwater question. The boat currently has a 120 gallon water tank but, since I have purchased a 6-10 gph watermaker, I'm wondering if I couldn't go to a smaller tank and use the extra space for storage or equipment. The tank is located under the bed, if that matters.

All thoughts will be appreciated,
CapnC.

Re: Tanks a lot

Hi,
I would keep the large water tank. It will give you more time to get back to civilization if the watermaker dies. We try to keep our water tanks full just for this reason.

Also, a few rare harbors we've been in are too gross to run the watermaker, and it's nice to be able to stay as long as we want without worrying about water.

Re: Tanks a lot

We reckoned about 8 gallons a day for 2 people so look at where you're likely to sail and see with a full tank and no watermaker you could make it. Like, Galapagos to Marquesas 21 days.
