If you're looking at Triton's, you might also want to consider the Bristol 30. Also an Alberg design and built like a tank. The full keel, attached rudder and enclosed prop aperture add to the security if you're in an area where you can bump into things or catch crab pots. They look to be in your price range.

We had an Alberg-designed Bristol 27. I've never felt more secure (though wet) in unpleasant conditions. However, it is probably too small for your purposes.

I used to have a Triton. Great boat but would be very tight as liveaboard for a couple and lacks a real galley. I've seen some Alberg 30's and 35's going for a reasonable price. Ranger 33 and Cal 34 which has already been suggested would be good choices.
