Ted Brewer 38 and Gulfstar 37 - Luperon Bay, Dominican Republic

Ted Brewer 38 2 and Golfstar 37 Luperon Bay Dominican
Not being able to get my boat ready for the trip to Caribbean, I decided to come to Caribbean and find something decent and affordable here. My first stop at Luperon Bay provided me with two options that I can afford (price is negotiable):
LuperonYachts & Boat Sales ~ 1975 Ted Brewer 38 Blue Water Sloop ~ Cruise Ready
and
LuperonYachts & LuperonProperties ~ 1978 Gulfstar 37 Aft Cockpit Sloop
I would appreciate any thoughts on those options, because I really want to go sailing and have no experience on buying boats in Caribbean.

Thank you a lot in advance,

SC

Re: Ted Brewer 38 and Gulfstar 37 Luperon Bay Dominican

I have spent time on a GS 37 and GS 52 cruising all about.

Overall GS builds an ok to good boat, but some things are hit or miss from boat to boat.

Most of the electric windlesses do not feed into the hawse pipe corectly. Just a thing I noticed on most of them.

Lots of room side and storage.

Not a speed machine, but not as slow as my Westsail.

I think the Brewer is the better of the 2. Of course on older boats condition is a large issue.

I like them both. The GS looks in very good shape from the pics and well equipped. Ted Brewer is a great designer of cruising boats but you want to find out about the builder. This is a custom build and many were by amateurs.

And a survey - hopefully not recommended by the broker.

Just found this and it may be helpful ...Living Aboard Forums • View topic - Ted Brewer 38

Appears the boat has been for sale since 2008 at least.

Contact Ted and see if he knows the boat. He will give brief casual advice or you can pay him a small consulting fee (~$300) and you will be well rewarded. Hell, it's worth the money just to chat with him.

Thank you all for the very helpful information. I have checked both boats and Ted Brewer 38 felt better, even conditions are worse the GS. My guess I will need another 20000$ to make it to feel good alarond. I thought about offering much lower then they ask, but do not want to offend the owner - he seems to be very nice gentleman, so for now I will wait and look for other boats.
Best regards,

SC

The market is very soft, at least in North America. All he can say to a low offer is no thank you.
