True this! I saw a Freedom 37 cat ketch that had this solution.

True. But a pilothouse masthead sloop is more my speed.

If there's a mainsail under that cover on the boom it is worthless.
That makes sense, re PSC and pilothouses.

And yeah, just from the pictures and the way the ad is worded I realized that the buyer of this boat is purchasing (at least) a new main$ail.

Could also do a hard dodger and hard top bimini with canvas sides, etc.

Great question!

For one thing, that picture does not indicate a healthy, new mainsail. It looks like a sail cover over a bare boom!!

Also, the wording of the ad "signals" (my word) that something's wrong. When the sails are new, or were recently replaced, the ad almost always says so (and gives you the year). When the sails are in excellent condition, the ad almost always says so. Once you get to "very good" condition, you start to worry: Very good at what? Making the boat go forward in normal conditions? Or handling (or even staying in one piece) when you get in weather?

When the ad doesn't say anything about the age or condition of the sails, my first instinct is that there's something they don't want me to know.

There's one in your neighborhood that's half the price of that Pacific Seacraft!

That's a lot of teak. Seaworthy-looking vessel though. I wonder how many times I'd break my toe on the clete on the deck going forward.

(I'd say "I'm not sure I want a motorsailer," but that might reignite the "What is a motorsailer" debate, and I definitely do not want to do that!)

Re: The white whale. The unicorn.

DMF sailing, we have a PSC 32 pilothouse. 1992. It's easy to handle and well built. As you sit in the cockpit you can see thru to the bow. We added a bimini for some shade
I believe that only 19-24 were built, so they are rare.
If you find one I think you would be happy with it. We are happy with ours.

Thank you so much for contributing.

Definitely 19-24 is unicorn territory.

Just curious, 15 knots, moderately choppy seas (i.e. your average day here outside July and August), how fast are you going?

With a waterline length of just over 24 ft, I say 6.5 knots maximum!

Yes, well, that's the calculation. Not every boat acts according to its numbers, though.

I’d bet a lot that a boat of that hull configuration and displacement/length ratio would NEVER exceed its theoretical hull speed through the water in 15 knots of wind!

Re: The white whale. The unicorn.

Here's a review of the boat (pg 45).

After reading the review, it appears it would check all the boxes for DMF.

Thanks for tracking that down!
